Some character designs from yesterday. They're related to the sky god of my world, Armana. Sort of alien in origin. The left is a powerful near-godlike entity called Pre-Genesis Makar and the right one is a generic member of a species called the Armatans. 2nd pic is size compare.

Some notes on the most intense study session of my life. Personal observations, so not sure how they'd fare as an actual advice
For gesture and structure, studying horses is almost as beneficial as studying people (probably true for any lean mammal)
Studying latex or any other shiny skintight material massively improves your skin rendering. They are basically just skin with maxed out specular, which makes the way light follows the form much easier to study
Color theory is fake, We treat it as a fundamental because it's a trad art artifact, where paint mixing/color matching is a hard necessary skill. In digital, light and values are all that matters. If they are weak no amount of color is gonna save it, if they are strong none will ruin it. It is a narrative tool, but it's hardly a technical skill and certainly IS NOT a fundamental.
At a certain point ref abundance becomes a distraction. I'm faster and better when I focus on just a few models
You can just keep painting past the burnout, like you can just not stop and you'll be fine. it'll suck but you absolutely can
"just paint more" is the most confusing and annoying advice for any beginner, but it's just true. I can't do anything about it, It really is the only thing that actually works
The trio of street urchins are bonded by shared post trauma and a need to survive. Though their stories differ, the pain endured is shared. It's like they say: "Shared joy is a double joy; shared sorrow is half a sorrow."
I was watching this again, wondering why I liked it other than the technical prowess it is animated with and I think it's Ōko's design. I really like the lankier proportions, it's not too humanoid, not too animalistic. Also, the first shot is eerily familiar, was it drawn before?
