in 2010 i took a class in my college called Pacific Destiny that looked at the design histories of countries along the pacific rim that had to rapidly industrialize in the 20th century.
Countries would follow this exact process of rapidly copying the west but copying so well that eventually there's an escape velocity that happens the countries own unique design identity emerged. All the brands in the quoted tweet are now brands with their very own design language.
When I took it in 2010, it was obvious that japan hit that point in 80s, and were witnessing Korea start to hit it. When the professor said China would hit it by 2020, it seemed inconceivable at the time but so obvious now.
