The Basque language has puzzled linguists for centuries because it does not fit into any known language family. While most European languages can be traced back to a common Indo-European root, Basque stands completely on its own. Attempts have been made to link it to ancient Iberian, Caucasian, or even long-extinct languages, but none of these theories have been proven. Its structure, vocabulary, and grammar remain distinct, making it one of the most unusual linguistic survivors in the world.
It is spoken in a region straddling northern Spain and southwestern France, particularly around the western Pyrenees. What makes its survival remarkable is the historical pressure it faced. Roman expansion brought Latin into the region, which later evolved into Spanish and French, yet Basque persisted alongside them. Over time, it absorbed some external influences, but its core identity remained intact, suggesting deep local roots that predate many of Europe’s major cultural shifts.
In the modern era, Basque has not only survived but adapted. It was standardized into a unified form known as Euskara Batua in the 20th century to support education and communication across dialects. Today, it is taught in schools, used in media, and recognized officially in parts of Spain. As the only widely accepted language isolate still actively spoken in Europe, it offers a rare linguistic window into a past that has otherwise been largely erased.

In 1879, a British/Scottish medical student named Robert Felkin watched an African healer in Uganda perform a caesarean section.
Clean incision. Banana wine as anaesthetic and antiseptic. Bleeding cauterised with hot iron. Wound closed with iron pins and herbal root paste.
Mother recovered fully. Baby survived.
Felkin noted in his journal that the technique was SO REFINED, it was clearly standard practice, performed routinely long before any European arrived.
At that same moment, hospitals in London and Edinburgh were still debating whether caesarean sections could ever be justified on a living woman.
European surgeons were operating in street clothes, rarely washing their hands, and losing most patients to post-operative infection.
The Africans had already solved anaesthesia, anti sepsis, haemostasis, and wound care.
Felkin went home and presented his findings to the Edinburgh Obstetrical Society in 1884.
The knife used in that surgery still exists.
It is now housed in the Science Museum in London.
A silent artifact of a surgical tradition they called primitive.
They didn't discover our medicine.
They witnessed it, wrote it down and forgot to mention where it came from.

Did you know that the first church in the world still exists today? It's the Cave of St. Peter (Church of Saint Peter) in Antioch (modern-day Antakya, Turkey)
This humble cave carved into the mountainside is where the Apostle Peter is believed to have preached around 40-50 AD. It’s the place where the early followers of Jesus gathered in secret, and where they were first called “Christians” (Acts 11:26).

During Pope Leo XIV's recent Apostolic Journey to Africa, the world was moved by a powerful moment at the final Mass in Malabo Stadium, Equatorial Guinea.
At the end of the celebration, the Holy Father prayed and sang the Regina Coeli in thanksgiving before a stunning image of Our Lady of Bisila, the beloved Mother and Patroness of Equatorial Guinea.
Clothed in white and blue, with the Child Jesus carried on her back in traditional African style, this image beautifully shows Mary walking alongside her people in every struggle and hope.
The Inspiring Story of Our Lady of Bisila:
According to local tradition, in the early 20th century on Bioko Island, the Virgin Mary appeared to a humble Bubi woman amid great suffering from a mysterious epidemic that struck the Bubi people.
Our Lady identified herself as Bisila and gave instructions for the cure and protection of the children, treasures of the land. She promised renewal and life if the people listened and followed her words.
What began as a local devotion among the Bubi tribe grew into a profound national Marian faith. Priests later recognized the deep connections to the Blessed Virgin Mary, promoting her as "Our Lady of the Island" or "Mother Bisila." A chapel and statue were built, and her image, often depicted as a Black Madonna, was placed on Basile Mountain overlooking Malabo. She was solemnly crowned in 1987.
Today, Our Lady of Bisila continues to inspire faith, culture, music, and dance across Equatorial Guinea, blending deep African roots with Catholic devotion.

Have practiced the first Saturday devotion for about 4-5 years. I simply attend every first Saturday now with the same approach Mary outlined to Sister Lucia:
1. Go to Confession,
2. Receive the Sacrament of Holy Communion,
3. Pray five decades of the Rosary,
4. Meditate for 15 minutes on the mysteries of the Rosary.
All this is offered in REPARATION for the sins of blasphemy and ingratitude committed against the Immaculate Heart of Mary.

March 30, 2002. A firefighter working the last of the South Tower pulled a charred scrap of scripture off the pile. Heat, rust, moisture, and concrete had baked the page to a chunk of World Trade Center metal.
The page had stayed open in Matthew 5.
"Ye have heard that it hath been said, An eye for an eye, and a tooth for a tooth: But I say unto you, That ye resist not evil: but whosoever shall smite thee on thy right cheek, turn to him the other also."
A firefighter found it and called over photographer Joel Meyerowitz, who was documenting the pile. Meyerowitz carried it out wrapped in a scarf.
It is in the 9/11 Museum.
