Vivo cerca de una escuela y todos los putos días la maestra le dice por el megáfono a José María Cruz que no se salga de la fila. ¿De qué se trata José María? ¿Por qué no haces pinches caso?.

I'm beyond excited to give the opening talk at @d3unconf next week. I'm currently in the pit of slide-making but have emerged momentarily bearing gifts:

2nd semester of CS, I asked "What is a server?" in my intermediate program class. Everyone laughed, the professor looked at me incredulously & I continued with "What do you mean a computer doesn't have a screen?" And here we are today. Ask the questions until you understand.

My cofounder taught me about "code smells", which are basically clues in your code that might indicate there's a deeper problem. I think there are also "org smells"; behaviors / patterns / incentivizes that should give you a clue that something deeper needs attention.

While public libraries are simply an abstraction to some, for many of us they were & continue to be a sanctuary, a community, a public rejection of the notion that knowledge should be contingent on what you can afford, a place where no price can be placed on the access to ideas.

Configs are code. Configs are code. Configs are code. xitter.cf/copyconstruct/status/1… – at San Francisco, CA
Quite a lot to unpack about this Google BigQuery outage from about a month ago. First off, as an industry we've done a poor job of codifying best practices for safely testing and deploying *configuration* changes. Not only is the tooling lacking, we rarely even talk about this.

Just a reminder that a “nonviolent” protest isn’t a protest that’s supposed to make you feel warm & fuzzy afterwards. One of the primary points of protest is to make people uncomfortable with conditions as they exist. Don’t conflate nonviolence & comfort.

When you’re debugging something and all you can find is a single Google Groups post from Steve A. written in the fall of 2003 with no responses and you realize you’ve never felt true loneliness until this moment.
