Far too often, in every country on earth, the older farmer is refusing to hand the scythe to the younger generation. Don't be those people. You raised them, if you don’t have faith in them that is 100% on you and you deserve to lose them from your farm & life.
"Someday, all this will be yours…" A young man in Iowa heard that line for over a decade. Came back to the farm when his dad had a health scare. At the time, it was just for short-term help. He’d already started a solid career in ag retail after trade school because the farm wasn’t big enough to support two generations. But when he came back, he realized expansion could happen and his passion was the family farm. So he agreed to stick around. He worked his tail off. Took a job off the farm to make ends meet, married a local gal, built a life there. The farm grew. They dreamed of taking it over someday. But, "someday" was always just over the horizon. Every time they got close to talking about a real succession plan, his parents resisted. The goalposts kept moving. "If we get 80 more acres, then we’ll talk…" "If you can find a place to rent nearby, then we’ll talk…" "If you buy some land of your own, then we’ll talk…" "If we have a couple good years in a row, then we'll talk..." But the talk never happened. Eventually, with two kids and 10 years gone, they gave the owner generation a clear, respectful proposal for the future. And were shot down. Fast. So he made the hardest decision of his life... he left. Took a DSM job in ag retail and moved his young family to Minnesota. His heart’s still back on the family farm, but he finally put his family’s future ahead of a fading promise. Unfortunately, the relationship with his folks has soured. He told me this story, and asked me to share it, so others might hear it. For awareness, not to place blame. If you’re the next gen, don’t ignore the warning signs. If you’re the owner gen, don’t let pride or fear kill the legacy you worked to build. Succession only happens if someone’s willing to lead. And leadership means putting things in writing. Before it’s too late.

I left the farm to visit girlfriends in Wagga. One of our blokes crushes hand. General anaesthetic last night after surgeon tried to clean up with local but discovered too much damage. Fox ravaged chook house. Shouldn’t have left the farm 🫤 #harvest

Harvest is in full swing across Australia 🌾🚜 Long days, fatigue, new team members and increased machinery use can all contribute to incidents during one of the busiest times of the year. It is important to have a heightened awareness of risk factors and a system in place to manage them. Explore GrainGrowers' harvest safety resources to learn how to keep yourself and your staff safe this season. Learn more: ggl.pub/3WuPS8n 📷 Chasing Acres - Patrick from SA

Today's interest rate decision should be a warning to govts not to add avoidable costs to producing the food Australians put on their tables. “In horticulture, labour can account for up to 60% of the cost of production." buff.ly/G4ZLXSF

Western Riverina is dry. Even drier without much irrigation water. Wanganella, halfway between the two biggest rivers in NSW.

Reading @Senator_Farrell's patronising speech to @NationalFarmers is typical of the gaslighting @AlboMP Gov't. Europe want our critical minerals but not our #food . It shouldn't be a one-way FTA. Let Europe source their critical minerals from Africa or China with all the sovereign risk & ESG challenges that come with that or let's strike a GENUINE FTA that includes #agriculture. nff.org.au/media-release/far…

Sad to see Sky News, now News 24, become just another clickbait merchant. I just interviewed David Farley MP myself and found him perfectly forthright on the question of his loyalty to The One Nation Party Sky used to be different, then during Covid they lost their moral compass and lost their way. Now they're barely distinguishable from the rest of the Misinformation Industrial Complex, aka, MSM.

The Trade Minister Don Farrell addressed Australia's farm leaders yesterday at our policy making forum. While he asked the room to reconsider its position about the EU FTA, we remain staunchly opposed. Cattle Australia CEO, Will Evans said it well 👇🧵

The NSW Labor Government has just announced funding for sporting upgrades to 4 centres as compensation for Federal water buybacks – despite the fact the 4 centres are NOT affected by water buybacks. Good luck to those receiving the $, but irrigation communities miss out again!
