A missed disability can become a criminal sentence.
Praxis Initiative presents Minds, Justice, and the Law: Neurodivergence and Developmental Disabilities in the Criminal Legal System.
This first-of-its-kind public event focuses on neurodivergence, developmental disabilities, and Arizona’s criminal legal system.
Because in moments involving police contact, prosecution, defense, sentencing, public safety, and access to justice, one fact matters:
“Understanding can be the difference between life and death, or liberty and incarceration.”
This event brings together attorneys, legal professionals, lawmakers, legislative staff, disability advocates, law enforcement professionals, families, people with lived experience, and members of the public for a serious, practical conversation about what the system recognizes, what it misses, and what must change.
Event details:
Monday, November 9, 2026

So comforting to know that instead of trying to reduce the assaults on staff, Thornell is instead out to get the whistleblowers. Nice message to send to staff! State troopers working with prison officials to investigate who leaked assault videos abc15.com/news/local-news/in…

Disturbing News: ADCRR has been granted a reprieve on implementing Receiver for healthcare. She will still submit plan of action, but will not immediately take over all decisions, hiring, budgets, etc. Hopefully, Plaintiffs will continue to prevail on this vital issue. Stay tuned
Analysis by Andy Hall:
MARICOPA COUNTY JAIL DEATH WATCH
During the four years from 2022 through 2025, 48 people died in New York City's Rikers Island jail complex. That's an average of twelve deaths per year. At the average daily population of 6,250 over the four years, New York City's jail mortality rate (12÷6,250) was 19 per 10,000 persons jailed.
Meanwhile, over the same four years, 160 people died in Maricopa County's jail complex. That's an average of 40 deaths per year. At an average daily population of 6,550 over the four years, Maricopa County's jail mortality rate (40÷6,550) was 61 per 10,000 persons jailed.
That's more than THREE TIMES the death rate of the infamous Rikers Island.
People should be asking Maricopa County Sheriff Jerry Sheridan (602-876-1000) and
Maricopa Correctional Health Services Director Lisa Struble (602-876-7100) for an explanation.
Their job is to keep people in custody alive.
They are failing.

If we can afford $1.8 Billion on the status quo, we can afford $1.5 Million for independent oversight. Sign the petition and tell Governor Hobbs and the Legislature that we must have Oversight and to pass & sign the bill!

Rep. Blackman & Sen. Bolick Introduce Bills to Fund Corrections Oversight Office, Restore Independent Prison Accountability
“Arizona already spends nearly $2 billion a year on corrections, yet serious problems continue to go unanswered. Whistleblowers, families, and corrections staff have raised concerns for years, and taxpayers are left paying the price when problems are ignored. A modest investment in independent oversight can prevent far greater costs and force long-overdue transparency.” -@AZHouseGOP Rep. @BlackmanForAZ .
“We created this office to provide independent oversight, but without funding it exists only on paper. At the same time Arizona is spending tens of millions of dollars on legal fees and facing the risk of federal takeover, the Governor has yet to take meaningful action to make oversight operational. Funding this office is a necessary step toward accountability and real reform.” -@AZSenateGOP Sen. @ShawnnaLMBolick .

I’m Proud to have been interviewed for this @Reuters' powerful piece on extreme heat in U.S. prisons. This issue needs urgent attention—lives are at stake. Check out the full story: reuters.com/graphics/USA-TEM… #PrisonReform #ClimateJustice"
There is nobody in Arizona’s history that did more to shine a massively needed light on the ADCRR than Jimmy. People will live, people will return home and thrive, People will get to be people again, and the public is safer because of it.
This is the work of Jimmy Jenkins. Truth where it matters, when it matters.
All Arizonan’s owe this man a debt of gratitude.
Thank you, Jimmy Jenkins, for leaving this state better than you found it.
Dear Arizona,
Today was my last day with @azcentral. I am very grateful to have worked at The Republic and @kjzzphoenix for the past decade.
I have accepted a new reporting job in Washington D.C. I'll have details and new contact info to share soon. Until then, thank you.

Too many people to thank, but I’m honored to have worked with all of you on this important legislation. A special thank you to the families who never gave up. So many are breathing a sigh of relief today.
Victory in Arizona! 🎉 Gov. @katiehobbs signed SB 1507 into law, bringing independent prison oversight to AZ. Huge thanks to advocates, families, staff & legislators who made this possible. Special thanks to Sen.@ShawnnaLMBolick & Gov. Hobbs for your leadership!

5 hard years. Blood, sweat, & tears. When I came home from prison during COVID & met @fab_john, I knew oversight was possible and if anyone could make it happen it was him. He threw open doors, handed me a crash course in AZ politics, & let me run absolutely wild. This win is deeply personal. Every victory makes the weight of incarceration a little lighter. There’s still so much to fight for, and we’re not going anywhere. Cheers, my friend @fab_john ❤️

🎉 WE DID IT! SB 1507 PASSES!
🏆Huge thanks to the legislators who made ADCRR oversight possible:
📋 Bill Sponsor: Sen. @ShawnnaLMBolick - thank you for your leadership and steadfast commitment to getting this into law!
📝 House Amendment Sponsor: Rep. @BlackmanForAZ - your multi-year commitment to oversight and all your work on this issue made a massive difference! &
⚖️ Sen. @RepAnaliseOrtiz - Your dedication on this issue and your selfless acts in securing bipartisan support were instrumental in securing this victory!
With a special shout out to @NealCarterAZ for sponsoring the bill previously and your support throughout this process.
Finally, to the visionary lawmaker that gave us our first chance at this legislation and has never wavered in his support, @Diego4Justice
When legislators work across party lines, Arizona wins.
34,500 people in ADCRR custody now have independent oversight protecting their constitutional rights AND ensuring safe working conditions for correctional staff.
