Playing around with an idea: responsive code. The build script creates up to 5 versions of each code sample using Prettier, and a container query displays the right one. Brotli means the filesize overhead is very small. Live demo: jakearchibald.com/2026/css-c…

PSA: when you wake up, reach for your phone immediately. Do NOT scroll Instagram reels. Send a good morning message. Not to your girlfriend, to Claude. That way, you can start the clock for your 5 hour Claude Code usage limit while you freshen up and head to the office. At noon, the 5 hour window would have passed and the usage limit would reset. Then you can generate more shareholder value.

LLMs are bad at math. They’re bad at orchestration. But they’re really good at writing TypeScript. So we gave them a runtime. Code Mode in TanStack AI lets the model write & execute TS instead of chaining tools. 🧠 1 call instead of N ⚡ parallel execution 📉 fewer tokens ✔︎ correct results This changes how you build AI apps. My dear front-end developers (and anyone who’s interested in the future of interfaces): I have crawled through depths of hell to bring you, for the foreseeable years, one of the more important foundational pieces of UI engineering (if not in implementation then certainly at least in concept): Fast, accurate and comprehensive userland text measurement algorithm in pure TypeScript, usable for laying out entire web pages without CSS, bypassing DOM measurements and reflow

“Dude did you vibe code this slop? This feature sucks!” Been getting this more recently. And no, I didn't “vibe” it. Did you ever consider, for one single second… That I might just be retarded? And I wrote this organic slop myself?

From the very beginning, one of our main goals was: Typing math should be as natural as typing plain text. No syntax, no coding—just start typing, no learning required

imo all apps with a 'for you' timeline should allow you to toggle a bizzaro switch and browse the 'NOT for you' timeline, just to feel what the opposite is like

Sunday rant. For software engineering, my sense is that the phrase “premature optimization is the root of all evil” has massively backfired. Its from a book on data structures and mainly tried to dissuade people from prematurely write things in assembler. But the point was to free you up to think harder about the data structures to use, not leave things comically inefficient. This context is always skipped when it’s uttered. Not all fast software is world-class, but all world-class software is fast. Performance is _the_ killer feature. If you are in engineering, here is a fantastic anecdote. I refer to this account often. It’s a bit subtile, but the implications are massive- It’s an account of how SQLite became 50% faster, not by doing one specific thing but hundreds of small ones. SQLite is everywhere today because of this work. sqlite-users.sqlite.narkive.… We need the engineers in all companies fight for this more. Product leads are not the right owners of the end performance of the software. This needs to be encoded in the professional pride of the software engineering discipline. Leaders in companies need to encourage it and hold engineering accountable. It’s simply not ok to fritter away the performance of the products for random reasons. Every user of your products cares exactly as much about latency as engineers do when typing in their terminal. They just don’t have the words to describe what they don’t like about the experience and neither should they.

We do the same at 37. Pull requests, especially for more junior staff, is littered with even the most pedantic comments. Style matters. Linters don't capture it all. You learn by being shown the way. This shouldn't be controversial or seen as "toxic".
Best place I worked in terms of code quality was JetBrains. Every PR I submitted had like 50+ comments from my mentor on how to improve my code. Some might say it’s a toxic culture. But the key point is those comments weren’t rude. I really felt like my IQ grows two points every second. Code quality was unmatched there. The only place where the code was really close to being self-documented.

Cookie banners. Just visited a US website, from the US, that ships a 457.11kB (minified!) JS bundle of a GDPR "banner SDK" from a "trust" provider. Over 3x the size of React. It ships its very own version of jQuery inside. Going to the "trust" provider website yields a 5.3s LCP (i.e.: 5s+ to load the first screen completely). 53% of visitors experience a similarly terrible loading experience. They couldn't care less. This is the stuff that's silently destroying the web. • For most users, these providers have gamified beyond belief your ability to actually block cookies. The primary buttons are always "Accept All", even when you "customize your preferences". More often than not, they're cheating you into accepting everything. • The amount of JS they ship, downloading from a 3rd party website, is destroying the web's performance • The aesthetics and function of websites is massively compromised. In the spirit of "privacy and trust", they're eroding the open web in favor of proprietary platforms. • They undermine the product engineering teams' efforts. I've met so many amazing design engineers who spend countless hours honing experiences, only to have them destroyed by cookie junk. Cookie banner slop has to stop.

People often think native apps are better due to “performance of compiled code” but it’s actually due to “not a hostile, buggy, artificially API-poor environment”. In the fullness of time, the web will win due to its superior deployment model and developer freedom. The days are long but the decades are short. The solution is to continue to climb the hill, raise the quality bar on web applications, sweat the details, and invest in technology that blurs the lines between the platforms and gives developers a great experience.
