A Knorr chicken bouillon cube has no chicken in it. There's chicken fat, 8th on the list, behind 2 kinds of palm oil.
The cube reads salt, monosodium glutamate, palm oil, corn starch, hydrogenated palm oil, sugar, xanthan gum, chicken fat, natural flavor, water, turmeric, disodium guanylate, disodium inosinate, maltodextrin, dehydrated parsley, spices, caramel color and TBHQ. Half a cube makes 1 cup of broth and carries 1,110 mg of sodium, 48% of your day.
The savory part is the MSG with the 2 disodiums behind it, which make a little chicken fat taste like a pot of stock. The 2 palm oils are the cube itself. They hold the salt and starch in a block that melts when it hits hot water, and the TBHQ keeps that fat from going rancid in the box. Turmeric and caramel color make the yellow.
Maggi's cube does list dried chicken, under 2%. Better Than Bouillon lists roasted chicken first, which is why it comes as a paste in a jar and not a cube.

Pharmacologists who need a rat's paw to swell on demand inject it with carrageenan, the seaweed thickener in chocolate milk, cream and plenty of plant milks.
Standard method, in use since 1962:
- One rat, one hind paw
- 0.1ml of 1% carrageenan, under the sole
- Swelling peaks within a few hours
- Give the new anti-inflammatory drug
- Measure how much less the paw swells
It became the standard because it works so reliably. One research team put it at thousands of cell and animal experiments in which it predictably causes inflammation.
On a label it is E407. It gives cheap cream some body, stops chocolate milk separating, and holds the water in sliced ham. You will find it in squirty cream, cottage cheese, the cheaper ice creams, custard pots, deli turkey, vegan cheese, almond, oat and coconut drinks, some infant formula, and the tin of food the dog eats.
A trial in Chicago, published in 2017, put 12 people with ulcerative colitis in remission onto a carrageenan-free diet and gave them a capsule every day for up to a year. Seven got a dummy. Five got 200mg of carrageenan.
Three of the five relapsed. None of the seven did. IL-6, an inflammation marker in the blood, rose in the carrageenan group alone.
The capsule held 200mg. The average American already eats about 250mg a day, spread across a trolley of foods that were never meant to need glue.

A man suddenly approaches a group of street musicians and asks, “Can I play with you? I’ve got my pan flute.” When they ask what he wants to play, he chooses Vivaldi’s Winter from "The Four Seasons"—one of the most difficult pieces there is.
And then he leaves everyone around him in awe. On the pan flute, Michel Tirabosco delivers an incredibly skillful performance, with remarkable breath control and emotion. Even though this was a planned flash-mob-style setup, the real talent of the musicians and the pure joy they bring still move people deeply.
A beautiful moment of music, connection, and limitless passion.

How Negative Thoughts and Toxic Environments Weaken Your Immune System, and How Neuroplasticity Helps You Recover It.
Your mind and immune system communicate every day. When that conversation is dominated by negative thoughts, chronic stress, or a toxic environment, the immune system often pays the price. This isn’t just “being in a bad mood makes you feel worse.” Decades of psychoneuroimmunology research show measurable biological effects: increased inflammation, substantially weaker defenses against infection, slower healing, and greater vulnerability to illness, including cancers.
Negative thinking, such as worry, self-criticism, hatred, and pessimism, keeps the body in a state of stress. The brain interprets ongoing mental threat the same way it interprets physical danger. This activates the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis, flooding the body with cortisol.
Short-term cortisol helps you cope; chronic elevation suppresses key immune functions. It reduces natural killer cell activity, which targets viruses and abnormal cells, impairs T-cell responses, and promotes pro-inflammatory cytokines such as IL-6 and TNF-alpha. Over time, this shifts the immune system toward a more inflamed, less effective state.
Toxic environments/relationships amplify the problem. Constant criticism, conflict, social isolation, or chaotic surroundings act as ongoing stressors. Studies show that loneliness and perceived social rejection don’t just feel bad, they alter gene expression in immune cells. Genes involved in inflammation become more active while antiviral and antibody-related genes become less active.
People in high-stress caregiving roles or hostile relationships often show slower wound healing and poorer vaccine responses. The body treats chronic social threat as a biological emergency, and the immune system adapts in ways that ultimately harm long-term health.
However, neuroplasticity is both part of the problem and part of the solution. Neuroplasticity is the brain’s ability to rewire itself based on experience. Chronic negativity and stress physically reshape the brain. The hippocampus (important for memory and stress regulation) can shrink, dendritic connections in the prefrontal cortex (the area that helps you think clearly and regulate emotion) can thin, and the amygdala (the threat detector) can become more reactive. These changes make it easier to fall into negative thinking and harder to interrupt. They also keep stress hormones elevated longer, creating a feedback loop that further taxes the immune system..
In other words, the brain learns patterns of negativity and becomes better at staying there.
The positive side is that neuroplasticity works both ways. The same brain that wires itself for reactivity can be deliberately rewired for resilience. Practices that reduce chronic stress and shift attention to present-moment awareness or positive meaning strengthen prefrontal regulation, calm the amygdala, and support healthier hippocampal function. These brain changes translate into better immune regulation: lower inflammatory markers, stronger antibody responses, and improved recovery.
Your immune system is attuned to your inner and outer environments. Negative patterns can keep it in a defensive, inflamed state. Positive, regulated patterns help it return to balanced, effective function.
This is NOT conjecture or silliness. Every point I made is supported by countless studies! Here are just a few of them:

We're going to see some incredible breakthroughs in treating cancer in dogs.
A 2021 study tested a peptide vaccine in dogs with aggressive bone cancer.
65% survived at least a year, compared with 35-40% in historical controls.
Early research, but I’d love to see more of this.

Another company warns it will leave Canada
Signal is the encrypted messaging app whose entire selling point is that nobody, not the phone company, not the police, not even the company itself, can read your messages. And Signal is now warning it may leave Canada. The reason is Bill C-22, the Liberals' so-called Lawful Access Act.

A serving of Campbell's tomato soup has more sugar than a Krispy Kreme glazed donut.
The can lists tomato puree, water, wheat flour and sugar, then under 2% of salt, potassium salt, natural flavoring, citric acid, vitamin C, celery extract and garlic oil. Half a cup of the condensed soup, which is one bowl once you add the water, has 12 grams of total sugar on Campbell's current label, 8 of them added. Krispy Kreme's nutrition sheet puts the Original Glazed at 10 grams.
Some of that sugar is the tomato's. A raw tomato runs about 2.6 grams of sugar per 100 grams and the paste concentrates it. The other 8 grams are the sugar on the ingredient list. It's there because tomato puree is sour and flour makes it flat, and the cheapest fix for both at a cannery is sugar. The soup also carries 480 milligrams of sodium a serving, 21% of your day, so you're getting the salt either way.

100% cotton clothes is not enough.
they can be loaded with chemicals...
96% of cotton is sprayed with glyphosate. then clothes are soaked in formaldehyde to prevent wrinkling, sprayed with stain resistant chemicals high in PFAS, and dyed with toxic colors.
you need to read clothing labels like ingredient labels and find 100% organic, natural clothes.

Get a kitchen scale!
A reader shared this example. Weight discrepancies can occur, but 805 grams is substantial.
Labelled weight: 9.355 kg
Scale reading, including the turkey and pan: 8.550 kg
Apparent shortfall: 805 g (8.6%)
At $6.11/kg, that difference amounts to approximately $4.92, assuming the scale is accurate and the weighing conditions are comparable. If the pan’s weight is included, the turkey itself weighs even less.

In 2006 the commanding general of the US Marines in Iraq banned his men from wearing the most popular sports shirts in America, because of what the burns surgeons were finding.
It was 50 degrees in Anbar province. The issued cotton T-shirt was soaked through in minutes, so Marines had been buying their own. Tight, light, sweat-wicking tops in polyester, the kind every gym in the country is full of. They were cooler and they dried fast. Nearly everybody had them on under the body armour.
Then the roadside bombs started. A bomb under a vehicle produces a flash of fire lasting a second or two. Cotton scorches in that time. Polyester melts.
The Navy doctors at the field hospitals described the result. The shirt turned to liquid and set again on the man's chest and back. A burn that should have been survivable became a far worse one, because there was now a layer of plastic fused across it that had to be cut away.
In April 2006 the order went out from Camp Fallujah. No synthetic athletic clothing outside the wire. It named the brands.
The Marines then went looking for something that wicked sweat, dried fast, did not stink after a week and would not melt. What they found had been grazing in New Zealand the whole time. Fine merino wool is now standard issue next to the skin for troops who expect fire.
That is twice in 25 years, in two different services, that plastic clothing has been tested on young men by an explosion. Both times the answer came off a sheep.

I’ve been advising govts on addiction since the 90s and in 2021 Mr Eby requested a personal briefing on addiction, homelessness and public safety in BC
I presented results from the large body of research conducted in BC with corroborating international evidence
He chose to implement policies that had clear harmful effects and one week after my briefing the BC govt ordered my university to destroy my team’s decades of scientific findings, also eliminating our ability to carry out funded research
Rational action concerning addiction and public safety left BC’s capital some time ago and IMO the biggest challenge of the next elected govt is to reform and redirect relevant public services

American eggs are washed. European eggs aren't. Ours are in the fridge and theirs are usually on a shelf.
A hen lays an egg with a thin coating on the shell called the cuticle, which seals the pores against bacteria. In the US, graded eggs go through a washer at 90F or hotter, at least 20F warmer than the egg so water doesn't get pulled in through the shell, then a sanitizer rinse. USDA's grading manual says most of the cuticle comes off in the wash. FDA then requires the eggs to be held at 45F or below from 36 hours after they're laid.
In the EU the rule runs the other way. Class A eggs can't be washed, so the cuticle stays on, and they aren't supposed to be chilled below 41F before the store either, because a cold egg sweats in a warm room and the condensation grows bacteria on the shell. Britain also vaccinates the hens against salmonella, which the US doesn't require. A washed egg has lost its seal, so once an egg has been in the fridge it stays in the fridge.

Why would half a cup of black tea make you more jittery than a full cup of green tea?
Cup for cup, green tea has roughly half the caffeine of black tea, so you'd think a full cup of green tea and half a cup of black tea would hit you about the same. They don't. The half cup of black tea is still going to be a lot more jittery and stimulating.
Coffee, black tea and yerba mate all wake you up, and that part can be useful. But they also tend to make you jittery and anxious, maybe even give you palpitations, partly because they raise norepinephrine. You notice it most if you don't normally drink them. If you drink them all day every day, you don't really get that effect anymore.
Green tea often doesn't do that, unless you're very sensitive to it. So when people looked into why, it turned out to be an amino acid in green tea called L-theanine. L-theanine balances out the anxious side of caffeine by raising GABA, the main calming neurotransmitter in your body. It also gives dopamine a modest lift, so what you get is relaxed focus rather than feeling sedated. It's my favorite calming amino acid.
