I have a new article out in this issue. I am as proud of it as I am of any of my public writing, and hope you read it. In contrast to many histories that position neuroscience as coming out of cybernetics, I show how neurophysiologists rejected key cybernetic tropes and claims.

The example that mentioned when the article came out was the Borderlands Shakespeare Collectiva. This is an organization devoted to making Shakespeare a meaningful part of US/Mexican border studies, and available to students who've been affected by US border policy....

To be clear, there have been smart criticisms of my Mellon piece—not saying there haven't been—what I am saying though is that few of these criticisms have actually defended the projects Mellon funds on their own terms. Just make a positive case that they're good and rigorous!

Carnegie Mellon’s literature PhD is being liquidated in favor of “computation,” casualized labor, and AI.
That has profound ramifications for, students, faculty, and program alums like myself.
I wrote it about it (w/ Catherine Evans, a current PhD student).

70+ years after the Civil War, the WPA Federal Writers' Project began interviewing elderly Americans who remembered being enslaved. This collection is at the Library & contains moving narratives & photos. #Juneteenth
Narratives: loc.gov/collections/slave-na…

ALT A portrait of an elderly Black woman, Sarah Gudger, who was reportedly 121 years old at the time the photo was taken to accompany the narrative she shared with the Federal Writers' Project. Her hair is short and white, her hands are in her lap with her fingers laced together and she is looking into the distance, to the left of the camera (her right). Her tattered shawl is safety-pinned together under her neck.

Just found a profound & out of print Audre Lorde interview from 1988. She's absolutely spitting philosophical wisdom on identity, voice, writing, oppression.

One of the quotes you won't see much of today:
