Of course, the subtext of this story is that corporations now have more authority over public walkways than pedestrians.

Happy birthday to Art Blakey, born on this day in 1919!
Drummer and bandleader of the Jazz Messengers, the long-running hard-bop group that turned young sidemen into leaders. His press rolls and explosive hi-hat defined the sound.

... the young people who work at these companies operate in a world [Silicon Valley, Berkeley, etc.] where these kinds of discussions are commonplace. Many of them aren’t really engineers; they come from the humanities, philosophy, or other disciplines. They’re 25 years old, they’re naive, they don’t do engineering work, they’ve never worked at large companies where real products are developed for real people, with discipline. And they get together, a bit like in Parisian cafés in the 1920s, to talk about these grand science-fiction ideas. When these young people resign, they know they’re going to attract attention. It allows them to feel virtuous and to be seen as very important figures. They claim to be giving up money, but in reality, they already have their stock options. So all of this is a grand moralizing performance that doesn’t serve the real objective it claims to pursue. There’s a great deal of naiveté here, which goes hand in hand with a certain cynicism…

For lack of clear rules about the use of AI in classrooms, it’s difficult to steer students toward slow, close reading and analysis. So I’m pretty sure that I’m gonna return to reading together in class and bluebook-style assignments next year.
Conan O'Brien exposes the brutal truth: everyday internet creators have completely destroyed the late-night TV monopoly
"Now you're competing with... hundreds and hundreds and hundreds of millions of people are making funny videos"
"NBC in particular capitalized on it... you have Steve Allen, then you have Jack Paar, then you have Johnny Carson... and it's a monopoly... and it's a giant machine that fires out cash"
"HBO, Cinemax, these other things are coming up... it's a little like Detroit and automobiles. Like, the things just started to change"
"For years we were working really hard to do something innovative and creative at night. Now you're competing with, how many people in America are posting videos every day, or worldwide?"
"If you do the math, nine of them are going to be one of the funniest things you've ever seen. Those come out every day. That's what you're competing against."
