Irrigation leaves a detectable pattern in soil moisture. 💧 ESA-funded research used satellite observations and irrigation-off model simulations to map major irrigated regions across the contiguous United States. The new method identifies irrigation’s distinctive pattern in soil moisture over time, rather than only direct differences in soil moisture. Results more closely matched official state-level water-use statistics than the existing map alone. 📊 Find the paper here: agupubs.onlinelibrary.wiley.…

Polar ice sheets play a crucial role in the climate system, yet they remain a major source of uncertainty in sea-level rise projections. In our next ESA Climate Change Initiative webinar on 28 September 2026 at 16:00 CEST, Prof. Ruth Mottram will introduce PISCO (Processes for Ice Sheets in Climate models and Earth Observation) and demonstrate how satellite Earth observation and high-resolution regional climate models can be used to track snow, ice and atmosphere feedback over Greenland and Antarctica. 📆 28 Sept 2026, 16:00 CEST Register here: us02web.zoom.us/webinar/regi…

Normal river flows remained uncommon across much of the world in 2025. 36% of the assessed catchment area was drier than normal, while a further 36% was within the normal range.💧 🛰️ ESA’s Climate Change Initiative contributed satellite records of lake levels, temperature, ice cover and snow storage to the @WMO's State of Global Water Resources 2025 report. The data complement ground observations and help to track changes in water conditions across regions and over time. Read the full news item: climate.esa.int/en/news-even…

Most of the ice lost from Greenland and Antarctica since the 1970s never melted at the surface. 🧊🛰️ A new assessment by the Ice Sheet Mass Balance Inter-comparison Exercise brings together 42 surveys from 27 satellite missions to build the longest satellite record of ice-sheet change to date. 💶🛰️🌍 Funding, funding, funding... was the theme of the first day of #UKEO26 with Beth Greenaway (@spacegovuk), John Remedios (@NCEOscience) and Susanne Mecklenburg (ESA). Susanne highlighted a range of upcoming opportunities through the ESA Earth Action programme. She singled out the upcoming CCI Next Generation (CCI-NG) procurement (Tender Action 1-13700), which involves research and development activities to advance the global satellite climate data records required for monitoring and understanding climate change. These capabilities will also be prepared for sustainable operational use to underpin climate services. The tender is expected to be released shortly: esastar-publication-ext.sso.…

How can satellite records be used as evidence of aerosol–cloud interactions? In our SATACI webinar, Marta Luffarelli will explore how aerosol and cloud observations can be collocated and stratified to establish physically meaningful relationships. She will also demonstrate how satellite-based studies can benefit from climate simulations and examine whether multiple long-term satellite climate data records could provide a radiative forcing indicator for aerosols and aerosol–cloud interactions, complementing the existing World Meteorological Organization climate indicators. Climate models need to be tested against real-world observations before scientists can use them with confidence. The new, free Rapid Evaluation Framework automates standard checks that have often taken months. Four satellite datasets supported by ESA are already used to assess the latest climate models, covering Arctic and Antarctic sea ice, snow cover and atmospheric ozone. 🛰️ The results will support key climate assessments, including the next report by @IPCC_CH. How can space help us see the changes unfolding across Earth? Last Saturday at the #ArsElectronica Festival 2026 in Linz, Austria, @mboothp took audiences on a journey from satellite observations and climate data to protecting Earth from asteroid impacts during "Protect Our Planet and Climate" in Deep Space 8K at the Ars Electronica Center. The live Science Experience showed how space-based evidence can turn complex global change into something people can see, discuss and understand. Want to explore climate data for yourself? How can satellite observations help us recognise when lake ecosystems are approaching critical thresholds? 🌊 Today at the @OceanOpticsConf in Ghent, researchers from @environmentca and the ESA CCI project Remote Sensing of Tipping Points in Lakes will present research findings from the Laurentian Great Lakes. The study examines how differences between satellite sensors can affect long-term Chlorophyll-a trends and the detection of ecological regime shifts and tipping points. 📍 Poster 25 📅 Monday, 14 September 2026 🕒 15:30–17:30 oceanopticsconference.org/

If current disturbance trends continue, Europe's forest carbon sink is projected to decline by 39% between 2010 and 2030. 🌲 A study supported by ESA's Climate Change Initiative found that this decline is driven by the cumulative effect of harvesting, which accounts for around 85% of all disturbances, and a sharp rise in natural disturbances, such as storms and outbreaks of bark beetles. Planting three billion trees alone would not close the gap; meeting the 2030 benchmark would also require a 28% reduction in forest harvesting from 2025 to 2030. More context on Europe's changing forests: climate.esa.int/en/news-even…
