I’m not sure that I agree with all conclusions here, but the analysis of ecofascism herein is essential reading.
Today is both Christchurch and #ClimateStrike. Let's talk about how they are related. "If there were a button I could press, I would sacrifice myself without hesitating, if it meant millions of people would die." - Pentti Linkola, Finnish 'deep ecologist' CW: climate, violence

The very worst thing we could do as cryptographers is convince people to move critical societal functions into opaque experimental-quality cryptographic systems they can’t understand or even argue with. And then implement those systems incorrectly.

Indeed, in 2018 a Maxwell's Demon which extracts more work than the delta in thermodynamic free energy was experimentally demomstrated, and has since been replicated. Information must be explicitly accounted for as a source of work. journals.aps.org/prl/abstrac… phys.org/news/2018-01-effici…

We live in a world where we don’t trust software because we inspected it and it was crap. So we “fixed” it by putting all our trust into hw that we made inspection resistant so that we don’t know it is crap.

So much this. It seems like there are always two big vulnerabilities that are disclosed around the same time: one that everyone talks about and one that everyone gets pwned with.
This is where I'm going to call the media out. We have a highly critical drupal RCE which likely affects thousands of sites. Yet more media attention has been drawn to the memory issue in password managers, which won't be an issue for almost all users of them.

Huh, we were worried we’d build a paperclip maximizer, but instead we built an engagement maximizer, and it might be just as bad.

I have very little nostalgia for old technology—modern computing is a huge technical improvement over what we had in the ‘70s/’80s/’90s. I have a lot of nostalgia for old tech business models, though.

The problem is not that people don't have skills. It's that companies don't want to pay workers decent wages. Pay good wages and you'll find good workers. It's hilarious how market advocates suddenly forget how markets work when it comes to labor markets
