The European chemical industry is heading for rock bottom. Well to be fair they have 7 cm still left to play with. But they don't have 40 cm, or even 24 cm. BASF’s low-water tanker sketch is internally consistent. It is not the same thing as the official Rhein channel. At Kaub 30 cm they publish: • 1.60 m water • 1.20 m draught • 40 cm under the keel If the gauge falls 16 cm to 14 cm and the ship stays at 1.20 m, that same sketch leaves 24 cm. The official fairway formula is different: depth = 1.90 m − 0.77 m GIW + today’s Kaub reading That gives: • 30 cm → 1.43 m • 14 cm → 1.27 m Under a 1.20 m keel that is about 7 cm, not the BASF design geometry of 24 cm with a falling waterline. To keep the original 40 cm in BASF’s own drawing, the ship has to come up 16 cm — draught about 1.04 m, i.e. unload. Actual clearance still depends on the latest survey, trim, speed and especially squat. A rapid change in speed at those kind of narrow margins would likely give a whole new meaning to the term redundancy. Essentially you have a 110 m inland tanker barge - laden with fuels and potentially hazardous chemicals - one powerful squat or sneeze away from bouncing on the river bed. That is not the starting point for new plants. Neither is it ideal for fish bigger than 2 inches. They deserve a margin on wriggle room. The sweet irony is that this necessitates diversification of freight methods. At last the German railways will get some much needed investment. They might even run on time.
