GC Survey related to a capstone: value, impact and process of re-annotating hereditary cancer results.

I and @GreyGenetics and @GreyGeneticsPod are almost off the SMs entirely.... if I know there are soo many GC student surveys.. if they were listed on Grey Genetics' website, would people look there/take them...? #GeneChat
Looking for good ideas to do a mini mini genetics lesson for a class of 2 1/2 year-olds..... #GeneChat

1/ I've spent the last 18 months investigating how our government reached the point of taking children away from their parents as a way to discourage migration to the United States. Here's my story about how and why it happened, and who's responsible.

If anyone wants a quick link to a petition for a call to NSGC to start taking Requests for Proposals from new firms to lobby the US Government for CMS recognition so that we might be able to turn our attention to lobbying for our patients, it's right here: chng.it/rPSbkmc2WD

I’m a mother of six, and a Mormon. I have a good understanding of arguments surrounding abortion, religious and otherwise. I've been listening to men grandstand about women's reproductive rights, and I'm convinced men actually have zero interest in stopping abortion. Here's why…
‘The terrain of mothering is not limited to the people who give birth to children’ @agarbes ‘Raising children is not a private hobby, not an individual duty… It is a social responsibility, one that requires robust community support.’ @jiatolentino newyorker.com/books/under-re…
Just watched and was also disappointed they couldn’t throw up a screen or two at the end… sudden cardiac death… often genetic, often preventable.
I LOVED tick, tick… BOOM! but I wish they had mentioned Marfan Syndrome at the end, the condition that they believe caused Larson’s fatal aortic aneurysm. So many people die before they can even be diagnosed so this was a missed opportunity to raise awareness. #TickTickBoom
Yes, and yet... communicating about uncertainty is also central to all(?) of medicine.. and public health. CDC is failing at something basic.
"In our experience providing patients with genetic counseling, acknowledging and directly addressing scientific uncertainty is both possible and beneficial." statnews.com/2022/01/21/what…

“For better and worse, the genetic counseling profession has intimately identified itself with genetic testing. Clinics would employ far fewer prenatal, cancer, cardiogenetics, and other specialty genetic counseling jobs if there were not so many genetic tests.” #GCChat
I’ve been trying to find the right words regarding the response by @EllenMatloff to @nytimes piece on non-invasive prenatal screening for rare microdeletions. Bob Resta has articulated so perfectly my exact thoughts. Worth a read ⬇️ bit.ly/32ZTuE0
👇Is everyone tired of this article? I didn’t like the framing but now I’m more taken aback that we seem so caught up in word choice and uncritical or angry about lab marketing practices. #GCChat

“Covid zero is impossible with omicron, so what’s the point in even trying to reduce/slow transmission?”
My answer: 🧵 1/

Absolutely. The marketing of NIPT here in Australia is also somewhat in code, some talks of reducing need for invasive tests and "Your results will identify whether or not your baby is carrying any of the chrome conditions listed". GC only avail post-result (often only one appt)
Thanks to @katie_stoll for talking with me about this article and for talking with me about us (genetic counselors) talking about this article! Hit so many nerves. #GCChat
NYT published an article focused on false positive rates in NIPS/NIPT. The reaction on Twitter from genetic counselors was mostly critical.
Listen to the new episode of Genotypecast to hear GCs Eleanor Griffith and @katie_stoll discuss the implications of this article. #GCchat
Recommend listening somewhere where you can crank the audio (ex headphones v in car). Sorry, audio is hard! 😔 #donthavethedailysresources

If you can get past the use of the word “wrong” in the context of a screening test… (try subbing “false positive)- this is good article on some of the problems with NIPS tests and their misleading marketing in our profit-driven healthcare system. nytimes.com/2022/01/01/upsho…
