A suffragette on the Strand, London, c.1909.
This is Vera Wentworth, campaigning for Votes for Women by turning herself into a walking advertisement.
Her apron promoted an upcoming march and public meeting, directing supporters to assemble at Victoria Embankment at 12.30.
Women campaigning alone on the streets often attracted crowds of curious—and sometimes heckling—boys, as this wonderful photograph captures.
A striking glimpse of the suffrage campaign at street level.

The summer of 1947 was a scorcher! After one of the coldest winters in living memory, Britain suddenly went from freezing to frying.
Temperatures hit 34.4°C (94°F) in June, and by August they were back up around 34°C (93°F) in places.
What is interesting in this film is the way everyone is dressed in a heatwave!

I’ve an interest in post boxes, & often discuss them on tours, like the link with Anthony Trollop, and the evolution of their (wonderful) design.
So I wasn’t expecting to learn much new in this article.
How wrong I was!
Cracking discussion by Patrick Ryan, full of gems.
Its amazing that ciphers from #Britishmonarchs adorn many #Irish postboxes 150 later.
Patrick Ryan explores why.

In 1917, at Passchendaele, Captain Jack Seely’s horse, Warrior, stumbled into a shell crater and became trapped in mud and barbed wire. Under heavy fire, Jack refused to abandon him. For forty-five minutes, he cut wire, dug with his hands, and spoke gently to calm the panicked horse.
Warrior, who had carried Jack through countless battles, trusted him completely—and Jack trusted him in return. Against all odds, they both survived.
Warrior became one of only 62,000 horses to return home from the one million Britain sent to the war. He lived out his days in comfort and was buried at Jack Seely’s estate, near where Jack himself requested to be laid to rest.
True bravery, Jack wrote, is not just survival—it is compassion for those who lay down their lives for us.
From this Story Spielberg directed "War Horse," It was later made into a stage show.
