Two things can be true at once, and I think the argument is because of people confusing the two. 1. AI has no creative taste and makes slop when asked 2. AI can do incredibly tedious work to make awesome things possible For a really simple example: having AI write a novel would be terrible. AI translating a novel to a different language with human oversight is much less terrible. Wish people would stop confusing the two

won't stop repeating this - the thing that makes products feel good to use is trying really hard, not some technology
How is this website so fast? I take a look behind McMaster-Carr and detail all the techniques they are using to make it fast. They are doing it all — prefetching HTML, inlined CSS, fixed images, pushstate — and all on a stack with 15 year old tech. youtube.com/watch?v=-Ln-8QM8…

Datasheet is live: datasheets.raspberrypi.com/r… Hopefully we kept you all guessing on what the "3" stands for in RP235x! Cortex-M processors are clearly best-in-class, but I hope you have fun playing with my core too.

"a + b", this one line of Python code executes thousands of lines of C behind the scenes. My latest article explains what goes on in the CPython runtime to execute this seemingly simple operation. You will learn about: - Dynamic dispatch implementation in CPython - What is the abstract object interface in CPython and its role in dynamic dispatch - What is the PyTypeObject struct and its role in the CPython runtime - How the various types in CPython implement operators and make them available to the runtime for dynamic dispatch to work. - And, look inside the implementation of the float type to understand this more concretely. The article includes 13 annotated code listings from CPython with all the explanations. Check it out: open.techwriters.info/codeco…
The next article in the CPython internals series is ready (pending edits). It stands at 1800 words & 13 annotated code listings. All that just to explain, what goes on when you run `a + b` in Python. Coming soon to the subscribers of Confessions of a code Addict (link in bio).

The simplest thing I believe about life is that everybody, without exception, flourishes when they are deeply and genuinely loved. I also believe that everybody withers when they are projected onto (negatively *or* positively) and told the projection is love.

That’s not what’s happening here. I’m trying to SAVE rural America from the ever expanding suburbs and exurbs! Density the cities, which reduces sprawl, which prevents rural towns from being taken over by suburbanization. Same goes for preserving open land and farms.

do you ever find it weird that as a culture we decided that “progress” just means advancement in technology and numbers on a spreadsheet, and that things like moral advancement, human joy, positive relationships, fulfillment, psychological development, and purpose don’t count?

This may be controversial to say: but I think Gen Z’s constant annoyance with “cringe” may actually be facilitating their ability to identify propaganda on social media…

4. Define a good day's work as making good progress towards your goals. Not by the time you were at your desk. Academia isn't like shift work. If I've made a solid amount of progress after 6 hours in the office and my brain is completely wiped, I'll go home (gasp!) early. 4/4

So many times the owners of copyright are completely unrelated to its creation. To preserve copyright should require duty and service to society, in promulgating cultural works. If you are not advancing society with its granted fiction, society owes you no custom.

It’s very important for people to understand copyright is a ~fictional privilege~ granted by society for its own interests in advancing the arts through incentive via artificial protection. NOT a moral, physical reality. In that, we should be much more onerous in revoking it.

In the heart of World War II, as the Nazis took control of Copenhagen, a peculiar situation took place at the Institute of Theoretical Physics, led by physicist Niels Bohr. Two Nobel laureates Max von Laue and James Franck, fearing the confiscation of their gold Nobel Prize medals by the Nazis, had sent their medals to Bohr for safekeeping. On the day the Nazis arrived in Copenhagen, Hungarian chemist Georgy de Hevesy, who was working in Bohr's lab, devised a plan to prevent the discovery of the medals. Initially considering burying the medals, they quickly dismissed the idea, fearing the thorough searches the Nazis would conduct. Instead, de Hevesy proposed a chemical solution — literally. Utilizing a mixture known as "aqua regia" (a blend of hydrochloric and nitric acids), he set about dissolving the gold medals. This concoction is one of the few substances capable of dissolving gold, a notably unreactive element. As the Nazis marched outside, de Hevesy dissolved the precious medals, reducing them to a colorless solution that eventually turned bright orange. The liquid containing the dissolved gold was then placed on a high shelf in the laboratory, where it remained unnoticed throughout the Nazi occupation. Post World War II, upon returning to the laboratory after V-E Day, de Hevesy found the beaker undisturbed on the shelf. The gold was recovered from the solution and returned to the Nobel Prize committee, who then reminted the medals and presented them back to Laue and Franck in a ceremony in 1952.
