On August 18, when given the choice between Angie Nixon and Alex Vindman, a stiff, poll-tested moderate of the kind Democrats have been foisting upon Floridians for years, voters chose Nixon by a decisive 12-point margin. The result shocked national commentators.
It was a testament to how poorly Vindman understood Florida — “He says he’s lived here for three years,” Nixon says, “but I had never heard of him” — that he failed to see what was obvious on the ground: Democratic voters were fed up with the status quo.
Nixon, a dynamic 42-year-old Black single mother turned union organizer, has premised her Senate campaign on the idea that GOP rule in Florida has been a disaster. The Democrats’ go-to response over the past 30 years has largely been to run the most anodyne candidates they can find, only to watch the state become redder. Nixon has taken the opposite approach, seizing on a polarizing agenda of bigger government and universal programs that pundits long assumed would exclusively resonate in deep-blue states like New York.
What makes Nixon different, according to people who know her, is that her public brawling is matched by her shrewdness and stamina as an organizer. “Angie won the Democratic primary because she has been knocking on doors, talking to people, alongside people, for decades,” says educator and writer Phillip Agnew. She is unafraid to talk to anyone.
The public line is that she’s running to win this election, even if the polls say that result is unlikely. But no matter the outcome, she is providing a template for the kind of durable grassroots operation Democrats have neglected when running in Florida.

interesting what they're allowed to interpret literally (streamer makes a joke years ago), versus what they're allowed to dismiss as simple "jokes" (lifelong neocon republicans opine for a republican majority in 2026)
noticing!
Tim Miller updates Bill Kristol on the fallout over James Carville
Tim: That's wrong. That is a bad point. I think James maybe is getting a little too wrapped up in his internal factional politics there
Bill: You shouldn't always take James too literally. Sometimes you have to take him seriously... I didn't know that had gotten him or us in trouble.
Tim: You do concur that it'd be better to have a narrow democratic majority?
Bill: Yes. Generally, it's better to win than to lose, which I think is also something Carville *usually* says
PBD crew apologizes to Adam Friedland:
Adam: "I do think it was his intent to come on the podcast and clearly disrupt and basically provoke us, and unfortunately I took the bait and I made an inappropriate comment, and I apologize for that."
...
PBD: "Everything falls on me, and thats not my standards and I don't like that at all."
Actually cannot believe what I've read here.

Police in Philadelphia arrested a 78-year-old woman for protesting an Uber Eats delivery robot by standing in its way. Cops charged her with disorderly conduct just for standing in front of a robot on a public sidewalk.
Carolyn Marvin is a retired communications professor who spent decades teaching freedom of expression at the University of Pennsylvania. She said she specifically keeps the sidewalk open and fully accessible for human pedestrians, and that her actions only target the autonomous vehicle.
Marvin has been blocking delivery robots for months to protest the replacement of human delivery workers. She considers her actions to be protected by the First Amendment.

Y'all serious @TheDemocrats?
Angie Nixon is the ONLY Senate candidate you're bidding against on Google to divert $ away from Florida?
Not El-Sayed, Jackson, Talarico, Andrews, Brown, Cooper, Pappas, Hamilton, Turek, Peltola, or Ossoff.
Just Angie Nixon.

A brief review of recent technical “errors” at Meta:
1. Restricting the Facebook pages of Brazilian president Lula who is in a runoff election against a Trump-favored candidate
2. Shutting down the pages of Albanians protesting Jared Kushner’s plans to build a luxury resort in the country
3. Rejecting ads for a documentary critical of Elon Musk
4. Shutting down the No Kings instagram page in the middle of a major anti-Trump protest

A good rule of history: if you find yourself opposing a student movement while siding with the ruling class, you're wrong. Every time, in every era, whatever the issue.
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
Student movements have not always been on the right side of history. Mao's student Red Guards persecuted hundreds of thousands. Students helped Castro and Khomeini rise to power, and Nazi student groups opposed the Weimar Republic.

How do you say this and not campaign on Medicare-For-All...
TALARICO: When I left the hospital, I went to Walgreens to pick up my first 30 day supply of insulin—this new medicine that I now needed to live, and it cost me $684. I didn't have that kind of money, so I put it on a credit card. So many Texans with diabetes can't afford their insulin, can't afford the medicine that they need to live. And it's all because big pharma has a monopoly..
