My Journey into Anaesthesia: From Fear to Passion
My journey into anaesthesia began with an accident that left me in severe pain. When I arrived at the hospital, I was informed that I would need surgery. The thought of undergoing an operation under anaesthesia filled me with fear and uncertainty.
But something remarkable happened. I witnessed how the anaesthesia team took a genuine interest in me, carefully asking questions about my medical history, assessing my condition, and ensuring that I was optimised and prepared for surgery. They patiently explained the anaesthetic process, its importance, and how they would keep me safe throughout the operation.
In that moment, my fear turned into fascination, and my fascination grew into passion. ❤️
I realised that anaesthesia is far more than putting patients to sleep. It is about protecting lives, relieving suffering, ensuring patient safety, and giving people a second chance at life.
That experience inspired me to join the anaesthesia profession, with a dream of making the same difference in the lives of others.
Today, I am proud to be part of a profession where every breath matters, every heartbeat counts, and every life deserves the highest standard of care.
🩺💙 Happy World Anaesthesia Day to all the incredible anaesthesia professionals who work tirelessly, often behind the scenes, to save lives.
Safe anesthesia = safe surgery

HEALTH IN FOCUS 🇷🇼 | Ten Years of Zipline in Rwanda
What if life-saving blood could reach a hospital in minutes instead of hours?
Ten years ago, Rwanda became the first country where Zipline launched its life-saving drone delivery service, marking a major milestone in the use of technology to address healthcare delivery challenges.
Today, after millions of deliveries, the story is about more than drones. It is about mothers whose lives depend on timely access to blood during childbirth, children receiving vaccines, and health facilities gaining faster access to essential medicines and medical supplies.
Key impacts from Zipline’s decade in Rwanda:
1️⃣Faster blood delivery:
Dr. Samuel Niyitegeka, Director of Nursing at Nemba Hospital, explains that the time needed to receive blood has decreased from more than two hours to approximately 40 minutes.
2️⃣ Expanded access to medical supplies:
Zipline delivers vaccines, medicines and other essential medical products to health facilities.
3️⃣ Childhood vaccination:
Rwanda has recorded 94% childhood vaccination coverage, highlighting progress in protecting children against vaccine-preventable diseases.
4️⃣Improved maternal health outcomes:
Research reports a 51% reduction in maternal mortality associated with Zipline’s service, highlighting the potential impact of timely access to life-saving medical supplies.
Rwanda’s experience demonstrates how technology can address real healthcare challenges and bring essential medical supplies closer to the people who need them.
The lesson is clear: technology matters most when it reaches the people who need it, when they need it most.

HEALTH IN FOCUS 🇷🇼 | How drones are transforming healthcare in Rwanda
“Technology becomes relevant and meaningful when it works for people and addresses challenges they face daily.” — President Paul Kagame.
Rwanda is demonstrating how innovation can save lives by using drone technology to deliver essential medical supplies where and when they are needed.
Since launching its national medical drone delivery service in 2016, Rwanda has transformed the transportation of blood to hospitals, helping healthcare workers respond faster to emergencies, including severe bleeding during childbirth.
In 2023, 28,754 units of blood were delivered by drone across Rwanda, with an average delivery time of just 25 minutes. Research has also linked drone deliveries to a 51% reduction in in-hospital mortality from postpartum haemorrhage and a 67% reduction in blood wastage.
Beyond blood, drone deliveries now support access to essential medicines and vaccines, helping address geographical barriers that can delay healthcare.
Rwanda’s experience shows that digital innovation is not just about advanced technology. It is about bringing essential services closer to people, supporting healthcare professionals and improving patient outcomes.
When technology serves people, innovation becomes a lifeline. 🇷🇼

We keep asking what the farm of the future will look like.
More robots?

More AI?
Maybe the better question is:
Will the farm of the future be profitable, resilient, sustainable, and worth passing to the next generation?

HEALTH IN FOCUS 🇷🇼 | Strengthening Rwanda’s health workforce and infrastructure
Improving maternal and child health requires more than access to health facilities. It also depends on having enough skilled professionals, specialized services and well-equipped hospitals capable of managing complications.
Rwanda is investing in these foundations through the 4×4 Health Workforce Development Reform, launched to quadruple the production of health professionals within four years.
By December 2025, more than 16,360 new health-professional students had enrolled. Residency programmes expanded from 17 to 24, while fellowship training grew from 8 to 25 subspecialties.
These investments are also strengthening specialized care for women. Rwanda has developed local specialist capacity in Maternal-Fetal Medicine and Gynecologic Oncology, alongside expanded training programmes in midwifery and nursing.
Health infrastructure is another important part of this effort. The Government continues to invest in the expansion and renovation of hospitals, including Masaka, King Faisal, Ruhengeri, Muhororo and Kabgayi, as highlighted in the Prime Minister’s report at the 20th National Umushyikirano.
These investments matter because preventing maternal and child deaths requires timely access to skilled health workers, emergency obstetric and newborn care, specialized treatment and reliable referral systems.
As Rwanda continues to strengthen its health system, sustained investment in people, facilities and quality of care remains essential to protecting mothers and giving children a healthier start in life.

HEALTH IN FOCUS 🇷🇼 | Rwanda’s progress in maternal and child health
Behind every reduction in maternal and child mortality is a life protected, a family supported and a better chance for the next generation.
Rwanda continues to make progress in maternal and child health. According to the progress report presented by Prime Minister Dr. Justin Nsengiyumva at the 20th National Umushyikirano, the maternal mortality ratio declined from 105 deaths per 100,000 live births in 2023/24 to 97.7 in 2024/25.
Child survival has also improved, with under-five mortality falling from 45 to 39.4 deaths per 1,000 live births, surpassing the annual target of 40.6.
The 2025 Rwanda Demographic and Health Survey highlights progress in access to essential maternal care:
• 95% of women received antenatal care from a skilled provider.
• 78% attended four or more antenatal care (ANC) visits.
• 98% of births took place in a health facility and were attended by a skilled provider.
However, the journey does not end at delivery. Only 68% of women received a postnatal check within the first two days after birth, highlighting the need to strengthen follow-up care for mothers and newborns during this critical period.
Sustaining progress requires accessible antenatal services, skilled birth attendance, timely postnatal checks and effective referral systems to manage complications.
Rwanda’s progress is encouraging, but continued efforts are essential to ensure that every mother receives quality care and every child has the opportunity to survive and thrive. 🇷🇼
