🇪🇺 European Parliament: New resolution demands release of all hostages in Baku ⚖️
The @Europarl_EN on October 8 reiterated its longstanding demand for Azerbaijan to free political prisoners, who include the leadership and common citizens of the ethnically cleansed #NagornoKarabakh / Artsakh.
It echoes a March 2025 resolution dedicated to the case of the Armenian hostages titled, ‘Unlawful detention and sham trials of Armenian hostages, including high-ranking political representatives from Nagorno-Karabakh, by Azerbaijan’.
That resolution made clear the European body’s view that prisoners from #Armenia were being subjected to “sham trials” and should be released.
Thursday’s resolution, which highlights the cases of two prominent Azerbaijani political prisoners, Ali Karimli and Anar Mammadli, also highlighted the ongoing illegal detention of Armenian prisoners.
It calls for the “unconditional release” of Azerbaijan’s political prisoners and highlights recent alarming reports from @hrw and @amnesty flagging a “deterioration” in Azerbaijani prison conditions, ranging from a lack of ventilation to dehydration.
The resolution further condemns transnational repression against Azerbaijan’s critics abroad and calls on #EU member states to treat any extradition requests from Baku with “rigorous scrutiny”.
Christian Solidarity International welcomes this latest resolution. It provides vital institutional recognition that Armenian prisoners fall squarely within the scope of Azerbaijan’s widening political crackdown, which spares neither Armenians struggling for self-determination nor Azerbaijanis critical of their own government.

‼️ “Today more than ever Armenians need unity”‼️
🇦🇲🇪🇺The EAFJD extends its warmest wishes and heartfelt congratulations on the 35th anniversary of the independence of the Republic of Armenia to all Armenians across the word.
📌The independent Republic of Armenia is our greatest achievement which was born from aspirations, sacrifices and determination of an entire nation, including the founding fathers of the First Republic of Armenia.
📌Today, three years after the tragic ethnic cleansing of Artsakh/Nagorno-Karabakh more than ever, Armenians needs unity — not uniformity, but unity around the fundamental interests of our nation and the security, sovereignty and democratic future of our homeland.
📌Political disagreements are natural in any democratic society. They must, however, never become a reason to turn Armenians against one another, or to create artificial divisions between Armenia, the Armenian Apostolic Holy Church and the Diaspora.
📌No government, regardless of its political orientation, should seek to divide these crucial dimensions of our national life. We must be able to disagree while remaining united around the fundamental principles that transcend political cycles: the sovereignty and security of the Republic of Armenia, the preservation of our national identity and cultural heritage, the defense of the fundamental rights of Armenians, and the strengthening of the bonds between Armenia and the Diaspora.
📌Our history teaches us that whenever Armenians have stood together, we have demonstrated a strength far greater than our numbers. Conversely, whenever internal divisions have weakened our national cohesion, others have been able to exploit those divisions to the detriment of our collective interests. National unity does not mean silence. It does not mean abandoning political debate or democratic disagreement. It means refusing to make the Armenian nation itself the battlefield of our political differences.
🟥The European Armenian Federation for Justice and Democracy will continue to work in Europe for the protection of Armenian rights and interests, for democratic values, for the strengthening of Armenia-Europe relations, and for the preservation of the unity and dignity of the Armenian people.
On this Independence Day, our message is therefore one of unity, responsibility and hope.
May the Republic of Armenia 🇦🇲 be sovereign, secure, democratic and prosperous.
May the Armenian people, in the Republic of Armenia and in the Diaspora, remain united in defending our national dignity, rights and future.
"For decades, the Armenian community of East Jerusalem has endured harassment, intimidation, and discrimination by extremist haredi (ultra-Orthodox) and nationalist Jewish youths. These incidents have included spitting on clergy, desecrating religious sites, verbal abuse, physical assaults, and other forms of intimidation."

The Corsican Assembly has adopted a resolution calling for the immediate release of 19 Armenian prisoners unlawfully held in Azerbaijan, according to the Artsakh Support Association (ASA). The resolution also reaffirms the right of displaced Armenians from Artsakh to return safely, with dignity, and without obstruction to their homeland, in accordance with the provisional measures issued by the International Court of Justice (ICJ).
The resolution specifically names former Artsakh President Arayik Harutyunyan, former Presidents Bako Sahakyan and Arkadi Ghukasyan, National Assembly Speaker Davit Ishkhanyan, former State Minister Ruben Vardanyan, Generals Levon Mnatsakanyan and Davit Manukyan, former Foreign Minister Davit Babayan, along with 11 other Armenian detainees. It characterizes the legal proceedings against them in Baku as arbitrary and inconsistent with international legal standards.
Hovhannes Gevorgyan, the Representative of the Republic of Artsakh in France, said efforts to defend the rights of the people of Artsakh would continue with the support of political parties, civil society organizations, and citizens committed to upholding international law.
The resolution comes nearly three years after the ICJ ordered Azerbaijan to ensure the safe, dignified, and unimpeded return of displaced Armenians from Artsakh. According to ASA, that ruling has yet to be implemented, while the continued detention of Armenian political prisoners in Baku represents a serious violation of international human rights obligations.
ASA expressed its gratitude to the members of the Corsican Assembly and the Core In Fronte political group, which introduced the resolution. According to official figures, 19 Armenian prisoners remain in Azerbaijani custody. Former Artsakh officials have been sentenced to prison terms ranging from 20 years to life imprisonment. Since the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) closed its Baku office in September 2025, no international humanitarian organization has been able to visit the detainees.

Why is @MarriottBonvoy running tours across sacred Armenian Christian lands that Azerbaijan ethnically cleansed of their indigenous population in 2023?
How is profiting from genocide consistent with your stated commitment to upholding “uncompromising ethical and legal standards”?

The continued unlawful detention of Armenian prisoners of war, civilian hostages, and members of Artsakh's former political and military leadership in Azerbaijan will be the focus of a high level conference at the European Parliament, as many have now spent more than 1,000 days in captivity.
The event is co-hosted by Members of the European Parliament Kostas Mavrides (Progressive Alliance of Socialists and Democrats, Cyprus) and Miriam Lexmann (European People's Party, Slovakia), with the support and coordination of the Armenian National Committee of Europe (EAFJD).
Bringing together lawmakers, legal experts, and human rights advocates, the conference will examine the latest developments surrounding the Armenian hostages held in Azerbaijan and present an updated assessment to European institutions and the broader international community.
Discussions will focus on Baku's politically motivated prosecutions, arbitrary detentions, violations of international law, and the harsh prison sentences imposed on Armenian detainees. Participants are also expected to address the broader humanitarian and legal implications of their continued captivity and the urgent need to secure their release.

Catholicos Aram I Meets Pope Leo XIV In Vatican, Raises Issue of Artsakh Return & Release of Artsakh Leaders Held in Baku
➖➖➖
His Holiness Aram I, Catholicos of the Great House of Cilicia, held a private meeting at the Vatican with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV on May 18, 2026, raising the right of Armenians to return to occupied Artsakh, the immediate release of Artsakh leaders detained in Baku, and a broader agenda spanning Christian unity and the situation in Lebanon. The meeting was confirmed in an official statement by the Armenian Catholicosate of Cilicia.
Aram I opened the conversation by addressing matters internal to the universal Christian Church, calling for the establishment of a common date for Easter across denominations, the designation of a commemorative day for all martyrs, and the convening of a Third Vatican Council. He framed these issues as urgent necessities within the life of the global Christian community.
The Catholicos then turned to occupied Artsakh, stressing three points: the right of Armenians forcibly displaced from their homeland to return under international guarantees, the preservation of Armenian churches and historical monuments in accordance with international law, and the immediate release of the Artsakh leaders currently held in Baku. The detained figures include former state minister Ruben Vardanyan, former presidents Arayik Harutyunyan and Bako Sahakyan, former foreign minister David Babayan, and other senior officials of the Republic of Artsakh, all captured by Azerbaijani forces in the aftermath of the September 2023 ethnic cleansing campaign that emptied Artsakh of its indigenous Armenian population.
On Lebanon, Aram I underscored the sovereignty of the Lebanese state and its authority throughout all Lebanese territory, called for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and stressed the need to uphold the ceasefire agreement. The Great House of Cilicia is seated in Antelias, Lebanon, giving Aram I direct standing on Lebanese affairs and a long institutional history of advocacy for the country's stability. He also emphasized the importance of the ecumenical movement, arguing that moral and ethical questions must be given priority alongside theological matters in inter-Christian dialogue.
According to the Catholicosate of Cilicia, Pope Leo XIV expressed his understanding and support on the issues raised, while also offering the necessary clarifications from his own perspective. Following the formal meeting, the two leaders held a further private conversation, exchanging views and concerns on related matters.
The meeting is among the most prominent international platforms on which the cases of Armenian prisoners in Baku and the right of return to occupied Artsakh have been raised in 2026, and it marks an early formal engagement between the new pontificate of Pope Leo XIV and the leadership of the Armenian Apostolic Church.

Davit Ishkhanyan has appealed to the Armenian Ombudsman, calling for an official visit to witness the "blatant violations" of international law and human rights during his trial.
Ishkhanyan stated that he was prevented from delivering nearly 40% of his final defense and characterized the proceedings as a strategic trial "against the Armenian people and Armenian statehood."
He is requesting the Ombudsman’s assistance in obtaining the full texts of the indictments and verdicts for his family. His message to the people: "Stay strong."
