Now far and wide the spreading mist Brings revels to a finish. It’s certain in a time like this, That one day I shall perish. —Mascha Kalèko: 24 Lines on Autumn
Nun legt der Nebel weit und breit
Dem Frohsinn das Gewerbe.
– Das ist gewiß die Jahreszeit,
In der ich einmal sterbe. - Mascha Kalèko

Happy #GlobalCatDay! 🐈‍⬛ The Cat Sìth of Scottish Highland lore is no ordinary black cat. Some believed it was a witch who could take feline form nine times—but the ninth transformation would leave her a cat forever. Best keep count. 🖤 #FelineFriday #ScottishFolklore #CatSith

“When a poet completes their recitation at a Lonely Funeral, the handwritten or printed poem is sealed inside a customized envelope and placed directly on top of the coffin. It is then buried or cremated alongside the deceased…”
The "Lonely Funeral" program (known in Dutch as De Eenzame Uitvaart) is a social and literary initiative in the Netherlands that ensures people who die without family, friends, or attendees receive a dignified, respectful farewell... It originated in Groningen, Netherlands, in 2002 when city poet Bart FM Droog decided that no citizen should pass away without being acknowledged. Later that year, poet and visual artist Frank Starik (F. Starik) introduced the initiative to Amsterdam, establishing a formal foundation and a collective of rotating poets known as the Poule des Doods ("Pool of Death"). To prepare for a funeral, designated poets collaborate closely with municipal officers who investigate the deceased person's life. The poets gather whatever personal details exist, such as remaining possessions, medical notes, or landlord recollections, to piece together a narrative. Using these sparse fragments, the poet crafts an individualized poem that honors the dignity, individuality, and humanity of the person who passed away. During the service, the poet serves as both eulogist and mourner, reading the personalized piece aloud beside the coffin at the graveside or crematorium. The tradition has since expanded across multiple cities in the Netherlands and Belgium, ensuring that even those who die isolated or unidentified leave the world with a dignified goodbye. When a poet completes their recitation at a Lonely Funeral, the handwritten or printed poem is sealed inside a customized envelope and placed directly on top of the coffin. It is then buried or cremated alongside the deceased, ensuring that the only copy of their personalized eulogy rests with them forever. (A second copy is preserved in the project’s official online archive so their story is never permanently erased from history). #drthehistories

Blessed be those who abandon everything in favor of at least a facsimile of peace. The humility of those who have everything is to abandon everything. It is necessary to have everything in order to abandon everything. — Clarice Lispector (quoted by Cixous, tr. V. A. Conley)

I think this is because Frye stopped being concerned with style and saw creating a mythology, sustaining a vision, as the more important part of genius. While deprecating his style, Bloom said that Poe, “dreamed everyone’s nightmare.”

King James II of Scotland was born #otd in 1430. A fiery warrior, he was a descendant of the House of Lancaster. 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿
OTD in 1430 - birth of James II of Scotland. James was the younger of two twin boys, had a distinctive birthmark on his face & was the great-grandson of John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster through his mother Joan Beaufort. An able King as an adult, he strengthened the power of the Scottish crown & sought to exploit England’s weakness during the early years of the #WarsoftheRoses. James was also an artillery enthusiast & proud of commissioning the largest cannons in the British Isles at the time. He was killed while attempting to take Roxburgh Castle on 3 August 1460, when he got too close to his own great bombard which backfired.

“studying a fine poet without stealing from him, a very difficult thing to do, and though many of the reeds through which he blows have been touched by other lips, yet he is able to draw new music from them.”—Oscar Wilde on Henry Crossley Irwin (1848–1925) tinyurl.com/33v7kn37
