Took my last Plavix pill today since the heart attack. Major milestone. Being in South Carolina and working with the team at MUSC has been incredibly therapeutic during this recovery. Making a pledge for this next chapter: continuous self-improvement and a zero-tolerance policy for toxic personalities. Keeping the focus sharp. No brakes. 📈 @MedUnivSC @MUSChealth @MUSC_COM @muschollings #Milestone #HealthFirst #MUSC #SouthCarolina #Perspective #Focus #NoBrakes #MovingForward

The people who invest in us can leave a lasting impact on our lives and careers. ACOS member Ivy Stejskal, DO, reflects on the mentors and communities that helped shape her journey to becoming a surgeon and shares why surrounding yourself with people who believe in your vision can make all the difference. "One mentor, or even an entire community, can shape the course of your career in ways you never expected. I can think back to many pivotal moments where a person or group of people poured into me so that I can do what I am doing today. In high school, I suffered a gymnastics injury that required multiple surgeries. While my gymnastics career came to an end, I gained something far more meaningful: an incredible mentor in the surgeon who cared for me. The impact of that relationship started me on my path to medicine. During college, I had the opportunity to spend several summers in Kenya participating in medical mission trips. In fact, last month, I returned to Kenya for the first time since becoming a physician. The experiences I had there, the patients I met, and the relationships I built profoundly influenced me and helped shape the kind of doctor I am continuing to work to be. Now, as I prepare to begin my PGY-3 year in general surgery this July, I feel incredibly fortunate to have found similar community and mentors at the University of Arizona. I have found people who continue to encourage me, challenge me, and support my goals, even when my ideas seem ambitious or unconventional. The best mentors become more than teachers, they become advocates and cheerleaders. They encourage you, remind you of your purpose during difficult seasons, and help you grow into the person, and doctor, you hope to become. Take a moment to reflect on how the people and community around you are shaping your future. You may find inspiration in places you least expect. Medicine is demanding, but staying grounded in what inspires you, cultivating strong relationships, and surrounding yourself with people who believe in your vision can make all the difference." @uarizona
