Writing Women’s Voices From 1798 and 1803
12th May – 1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
£5.00 – £6.50
Linda McKenna has been researching the experiences of women from County Down and beyond during the 1798 and 1803 rebellions in a variety of archival sources, including The Linen Hall. These records allow us to hear a wide variety of women’s voices detailing how they navigated one of the bloodiest periods in our history.
This talk will focus on some of the documents relating to women in 1798 and 1803, what they tell us about the time and how they are relevant today.

The first exhibition in the Irish language ever held at the Public Records Office of NI has opened. It tells the story of women who revived the use of the Irish language in Northern Ireland, setting up and running things like the first Irish-medium schools and nurseries.

Back from a lovely wee jaunt to NYC for @ucddublin's 'An Evening with Anne Enright' @IrishArtsCenter, chaired by Professor Margaret Kelleher! Also made the requisite stops at @KatzsDeli for pastrami on rye and matzo ball soup, and @strandbookstore for my biblio fix! 📚

Partition was a male invention. Gender impacted on how revolutionary events unfolded, and how partition was remembered irishtimes.com/life-style/pe…

“The partition of Ireland ... [has] always been presented through a male lens. What women thought, how they acted, how they were impacted, is rarely considered.” @MargaretWard1 @FinnClodagh

One of the most single-minded anti-Treaty women refusing to compromise on her allegiance to the 2nd Dáil, leading deValera to describe her as ‘incorrigible’. This biography seeks out a deeper understanding of a richly complex woman, too often written off as a virago
