Each year, almost one in 10 babies are born prematurely in Australia. Babies born early face numerous health challenges, including needing help to breathe. This #WorldPrematurityDay, read our impact case study on helping premature babies breath: ow.ly/mSJF50Xjwh1

On #WorldPrematurityDay, WHO is launching a global guide for kangaroo mother care. One of the simplest, most powerful ways to save preterm babies. Skin-to-skin contact isn’t just comforting; it reduces newborn deaths by 30%. On this important day, I also wanted to share my profound gratitude to midwives, nurses and doctors who help preterm babies, and their parents, during this very delicate period. Their service saves lives and provides comfort to millions of families worldwide. Every baby deserves a healthy start. bit.ly/3JYnky5

Kangaroo mother care is a simple, proven and life-saving intervention for babies born early (before 37 weeks of pregnancy) or small (under 2.5kg at birth). WHO recommends it should be started as soon as possible after birth and sustained for as many hours as possible. Here’s WHO’s new global guide for clinicians and caregivers bit.ly/4qS6qBU #WorldPrematurityDay

Preventing deaths and complications from preterm birth starts with a healthy pregnancy. WHO recommends: 🩺 Quality & respectful antenatal care, incl. early ultrasound 🍽️ Counselling on nutrition 🚭 Preventing tobacco & substance use 💉 Vaccination to reduce risks of flu and COVID-19 If you experience preterm labour, treatments are available to reduce risks for your baby. Go to a health facility straight away if you experience warning signs.

It’s #WorldPrematurityDay When preterm babies don’t get the care they need, we lose the chance to help them thrive. Did you know? Some of history’s great minds and talents were #BornTooSoon. It’s time to ensure every small and preterm baby gets the care they need! bit.ly/43NzUH8

Today is #WorldPrematurityDay Globally, 1 in 10 babies is born too soon – before 37 weeks of pregnancy. Complications relating to prematurity are the leading cause of child deaths. Small and preterm babies everywhere need special care and attention, starting immediately after birth bit.ly/43NzUH8 #HopefulFutures

It’s #WorldPrematurityDay Every year, 15 million babies are born too soon. Too small. Too early. And far too vulnerable to life-threatening complications. But with the right care, most preterm and low birth weight babies survive. They can go on to thrive and lead wonderful lives. Let’s give every baby the best start in life – for healthier, #HopefulFutures bit.ly/43NzUH8

Me reacting to all the CPAP 5-6 extubators 😉 #neotwitter
#neotwitter: When extubating an extremely preterm infant born <28w to CPAP, I would normally use an initial CPAP level of:
30%5-6 cm H2O
56%7-8 cm H2O
10%9-10 cm H2O

Is this the end for intratracheal budesonide mixed with surfactant? Find out at Global Neonatal Journal Club Wednesday 12th November at 17:00 Melbourne | 14:00 Singapore | 06:00 London | 11:30 New Delhi | 08:00 Cape Town | 22:00 Los Angeles | 15:00 Beijing Did you catch the amazing trial results from 2016 and since that found intratracheal budesonide mixed with surfactant to deliver it to the distal airways dramatically reduced BPD in very low birth weight infants? We did, and we thought maybe, just maybe, we had found the BPD SILVER BULLET! That led to the international PLUSS trial, published in 2024, which found no significant improvement in survival free of BPD with intratracheal budesonide mixed with surfactant in extremely preterm infants. At the same time, the similar BiB trial from the USA was underway, and the results were published very recently. Join us as our new Mercy Perinatal neonatal research fellow Dr Lucy Loft reviews the BiB trial (Ambalavanan et al, JAMA 2025), in the context of previous trials including PLUSS (Manley et al, JAMA 2024), and featuring an interview with the first author of BiB, Professor Namasivayam Ambalavanan (USA). Then join in the discussion with Brett Manley, Ju Lee Oei, Shiraz Badurdeen and our guest panel - world renowned neonatal researchers Professors Neena Modi (UK) and Peter Dargaville (Australia). WOW!
