After the patient's death, Alzheimer performed an autopsy on her brain and described the two characteristic lesions of Alzheimer's disease: neuronal degeneration (neurofibrillary degeneration) and abnormal deposition of a protein on the outside of neurons (senile plaques).
I chose this theme because it illustrates the amazing and fundamental role that cells play in our day-to-day lives and to remind us of the tremendous privilege that it is to have a body that functions properly most of the time.
