Every researcher knows mistakes happen, but it takes real commitment to open science to put your code and data out there, knowing the risks. You are *asking* the world for critique. Unfortunately, most of criminology is still unwilling to do this most basic step. That's why it was such a shame that Jacob Kang-Brown chose to take a more cynical approach, pushing a narrative that felt aimed at advancing an agenda rather than building scientific understanding. Open science is about collaboration and refining our work, not using errors as ammo. Not advancing political projects over professional science. What impressed me most was the original authors' restraint – no instant social media back-and-forth, just a trust in their process and the rigor of their work. They let an independent review confirm the findings and didn’t rely on tweets to defend themselves. That’s real professionalism and integrity in action. This kind of response should be a model for us all – letting science, not social media, do the talking. We should thank @jnixy and his co-authors for setting a higher standard for how we approach open science and handle critique in research.

It’s been a long time coming, but I’m glad that we’ve got a resolution. More from the authorship team soon, including our authors’ note and a long-form essay. But in the meantime, have a look at Nix’s blog to learn more about the outcome of a premature call for retraction.

With an active interest in policing, gangs, homicide, corrections, and even dept admin, the conversation with @ASUCrimJustice and longtime @UMSL_CCJ professor @DeckerCrime by former student and now gang-guru in his very own right, @dpyrooz, covers it all. Check out our latest addition to the OHCP archive. Scott Decker crimrxiv.com/pub/fc1v0y75

I had the pleasure of reading an advanced copy. Excellent book. My blurb on the back: "This book packs a punch. Paul Joyce pulls back the curtain on Boston's gangland to unveil the trials and tribulations of the boys who were there when it started and the men they became."

What's a gang? In a new vignette study, JDensley @dpyrooz & @jsanchez318 asked a US YouGov sample, describing a teen group and varying its features. They find that group names, violent activity, and structure all shape what the public considers a gang. tandfonline.com/doi/full/10.…
