David Greenberg was built different. Nearly run out of academe for anti-war activism, he was saved by Milton Friedman (yes, the Nobel Laureate). Trained as a physicist, he was a veritable savant in the world of criminology. His interview with the project demonstrates a genuinely lucid mind at work. He was unfailingly kind to me as an interviewer, including on my recently published biography of Travis Hirschi (Routledge Key Thinkers in Criminology), in which he accounted for his sparring with him over critical criminology over the years. At one point he sent me an article cut from the NYT via snail mail.
What a wild story about David Greenberg, the well-known criminologist and eccentric sociologist.
I once had the honor of watching him sit in the front row during my presentation at the ASC meeting in San Francisco—and promptly fall asleep.

No objections whatsoever to the compliments posted here. Our aim is to put all our guests and their work in the right context.
Stay tuned for more great content we'll be sharing shortly.
One of the central themes of our interview is the translation of criminological research into criminal justice practice and the mutually reinforcing roles of professor and consultant. @OHCP_CCJ
Fun fact: either myself or @lonecrim has been voted best hair for each of the last 15 years.

Keeping history relevant. Our Wolfgang episode earns a cameo in Malcolm Gladwell's podcast, Revisionist History. His discovery that 6% of the cohort accounts for a majority of violence informs targeted interventions that have dropped homicide counts.

A huge thank you to Marco Calaresu for the invite to Milan and Mirko Nazzari for the photo. We’re taking the viewers behind the scenes for an account of how oral histories are made. Think of this as a director’s cut.
Jody Miller (Rutgers University) has entered the 2026 OHCP chat. She'll be recording with us at the annual meetings with Old Dominion University's Vanessa Panfill.
'Bama CJ's @adamwlankford sits for a chat on serial killers. Many of us trace our interest in criminology to an early fixation on the subject. Worth a listen.

A podcast episode on Goffman's stigma and the criminal justice system. Wondering just how many podcasts that cater to CJ issues are out there.

Our first guest for the 2026 recordings at the ASC meetings is set. Rob Sampson will be sitting with Janet Lauritsen. Each has contributed to the archive at an earlier date. The former interviewed Al Blumstein and the latter was interviewed.

As I turn my attention to becoming the subject of an OH I'm reflecting on a few of my favorite contribution. Rich Felson has a personality that really shines in the field. A friend from grad school, UIowa's Mark Berg, did a wonderful job with the interview.

Esteemed criminologist Eric Hickey has a great podcast where he tells stories from his career. I hope other criminologists will chronicle their work this way in the future.

Fun fact about Loeber is that in his down time he maintained a hobby for. . . academic work. The fruits of his interest in medieval Irish architecture can be found in his published work and in the trove of rare books he left to Notre Dame University.
The late great David Farrington interviewing the late great Rolf Loeber. Both influenced my interest in multidisciplinary research, psychiatry, and publishing in an array of outlets and once told me, “Matt, you study the really, really bad guys!”

As we await word on the Project will continuing, a trip back in time. In the first batch is Michael Gottfredson (who also did an interview with his father in the collection). Apropos of that, the Director has a new book out on Travis Hirschi (Routledge).
