W. E. B. Du Bois died in Accra, Ghana, on August 27, 1963, at the age of 95. He was buried near the home where he had spent his final years, a place that is now part of the Du Bois Memorial Centre. The timing of his death was striking. The following day, hundreds of thousands of people gathered in Washington, D.C., for the March on Washington, where NAACP leader Roy Wilkins asked the crowd to observe a moment of silence in his honor. Du Bois had spent his life demanding many of the rights that the marchers were fighting for, and less than a year later, the Civil Rights Act of 1964 became law, outlawing segregation and discrimination in major areas of American public life. Born in 1868 in Great Barrington, Massachusetts, Du Bois became one of the most influential Black intellectuals in modern history. He was the first African American to earn a PhD from Harvard University and went on to teach history, sociology and economics at Atlanta University. He helped establish the Niagara Movement, which demanded full civil and political rights for Black Americans, and later became one of the founding figures of the NAACP. Through his writing and editorship of The Crisis, he challenged lynching, segregation, disenfranchisement and discrimination in education and employment. He also disagreed sharply with Booker T. Washington's accommodationist approach, arguing that economic opportunity could not substitute for political rights and equality under the law. Du Bois's work extended far beyond the United States. He was a major figure in Pan-Africanism and connected the struggle against American racism with the fight against European colonialism and imperialism in Africa and elsewhere. His books, including The Souls of Black Folk and Black Reconstruction in America, challenged deeply rooted ideas about race, history and the role of Black people in shaping American society. He also became increasingly critical of capitalism, supported socialist causes, advocated peace and campaigned against nuclear weapons. By the time he died in Ghana, Du Bois had lived through slavery's aftermath, Reconstruction, Jim Crow, two world wars and the emergence of the modern civil rights movement. His life stretched across nearly a century, but his central demand remained remarkably consistent: that Black people should have the political power, education, economic opportunity and freedom necessary to determine their own futures.

The Thabo Mbeki Presidential Centre will not be solely about the legacy of President Thabo Mbeki. His name serves as a peg - a point of entry into the stories and legacies of other contemporary African leaders who dedicated their lives to the continent’s liberation, dignity and prosperity. This Thursday, we look back at photographs given by the late historian Basil Davidson to a film research team headed by renowned Guinea-Bissau filmmaker Flora Gomes. The photographs were later handed over to the Foundation by Prof. Gerri Augusto, Director of the Undergraduate Development Studies Track at the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs, Brown University. These important photographs have now found a fitting home at the Thabo Mbeki Presidential Centre, where they will form part of a broader collection preserving Africa’s memory, history and intellectual heritage. This is Africa’s story. #ThaboMbekiPresidentialCentre #AfricanRenaissance

The greatest legacies are not remembered only in monuments. They are carried forward in the lives they inspire. Today, as Parliament paid tribute to The Right Excellent Sir Garfield Sobers in the presence of his family, I announced Government’s plans to rename Bay Primary School in his honour and publishing 365 Not Out, a pocketbook of daily lessons from his life for every schoolchild in Barbados. From the Bay Land to global greatness, Sir Garry showed every Barbadian child that where you begin should never determine where you can go. You can be a citizen of the world while remaining grounded in your Bajan roots. His runs can be counted. The generations he will inspire cannot.

"In a world that still suffers from the blight of intolerance, of wars, of antagonistic conflicts, of racism, of tribalism and marginalization, national reconciliation and reconciliation among the nations will remain a challenge that must occupy the entire human race continuously." - President Mbeki, 4th Nelson Mandela Lecture, 29 July 2026

“An argument that regards Africa as a whole, undifferentiated, is also problematic. We’re talking about 54 countries with different colonial experiences, resource endowments, pre-colonial traditions, and postcolonial trajectories. It cannot just be one governance story.” - Prof Toyin Falola Watch the full seminar: buff.ly/mLb30Ww #AfricanAgency #EthicalLeadership #TransformativeGovernance #PanAfricanism #AfricaRenewal

“So who’s going to bowl to him?” asked captain David Gower, calmly sipping his tea. No one volunteered. The room fell silent, eyes lowered, each player hoping someone else would take the responsibility. Finally, Ian Botham stepped forward. It was not exactly an act of bravery - he was just two wickets away from overtaking Dennis Lillee as the world’s leading Test wicket taker. Botham asked John Emburey to bowl from the other end. As they walked out to the middle, Emburey turned to Gower and said, “If this shit doesn’t work, don’t just blame me. And whatever runs I concede, count them as runs conceded by all the bowlers combined.” England had arrived in Antigua after suffering four consecutive defeats against West Indies. The first and fourth Tests had ended inside three days, and the third inside four. Desperate to avoid a humiliating whitewash, England were now hoping at least to salvage a draw in the fifth Test. Three days had already passed with England still batting their first innings, and everything seemed perfectly set for a draw. But one man stood firmly in their way, Viv Richards. Before tea on the fourth day, Richards was already 28 from just 20 balls, having casually launched two effortless sixes. When play resumed, he continued exactly where he had left off. Botham and Emburey tried everything they could. Botham peppered the pitch with bouncers, but Richards hooked them with disdainful ease. The assault was relentless. Years later, Emburey recalled the chaos of that spell, “One ball smashed a bottle of rum in the stands and came back with shards of glass stitched into it. Another sailed out of the stadium and landed near the prison where Richards’ father worked. Before Viv came in, my figures were 9-0-14-1. Five overs later, they read 14-0-83-1.” Richards eventually brought up his century in just 56 balls, a record that stood for nearly three decades. England, meanwhile, were crushed by 240 runs. Take any modern day T20 hitter and multiply his ability by 10. Even then, he would still be miles behind Viv Richards. Sir Isaac Vivian Alexander Richards turns 74 today ❤️
