New from the Thabo Mbeki Foundation: The United States of America and the Future of the Afrikaners in South Africa.
How did a country that gave freed slaves forty acres and a mule come to demand that South Africa abandon redress?

THABO MBEKI DENIES ALLEGED PLOT TO GRANT FORMER APARTHEID SECURITY OFFICIALS AMNESTY
Former President Thabo Mbeki has strongly denied allegations that he met former apartheid-era police and army generals as part of an alleged plot to grant them blanket amnesty during the Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) process.
Mbeki made the denial while testifying before the TRC Cases Inquiry, where questions surrounding unresolved apartheid-era crimes and the pursuit of justice remain under scrutiny.
The inquiry continues to examine issues linked to South Africa’s efforts to confront its past and establish accountability for crimes committed during apartheid.
The central question remains: what happened to the unresolved TRC cases, and will the victims and their families finally get answers?

4/6 For his family, as for so many others, the search for truth remains unfinished. These unanswered questions remind us that reconciliation carries a deeply human responsibility to those still seeking answers about their loved ones.

3/6 The letter also speaks to personal loss. President Mbeki writes that the TRC did not uncover what happened to his brother, Jama Mbeki, his son, Kwanda Mbeki, and his cousin, Phindile Mfeti, who disappeared without trace.

A Manufactured Decline
The TMF responds to The Common Sense, arguing that South Africa’s decline since 2008 was deliberately manufactured by forces inside and outside the state, and that the full story of its collapse has yet to be told.

5/6 As the Khampepe Commission examines allegations of interference in apartheid-era investigations and prosecutions, the evidence must be considered on its merits, with the seriousness owed to all who suffered.
6/6 “Surely, we must learn to listen to and hear one another.”
Twenty years later, President Mbeki’s words invite us to reflect on truth, human dignity and the unfinished work of reconciliation.

Cooperation and collaboration amongst academics and practitioners in the quest for enhanced knowledge of African maritime security were evident during the first African Maritime Security Forum. The event in Accra, Ghana, took place between 14 and 15 October 2026, and was hosted by the Kofi Annan International Peacekeeping Training Centre, University of Stellenbosch, and the Royal Danish Defence College. The theme of the Forum was ‘The African Maritime Landscape in Times of Geopolitical Uncertainty in 2026 and Beyond’. The TM School was represented by Amb Dikgang Moopeloa who facilitated a session on implications for Africa of geopolitical uncertainty and Prof van Nieuwkerk who delivered a paper entitled ‘minilateralism in promoting regional maritime security’. Insights gained at the Accra Forum will serve as inputs for the forthcoming TM School’s consultative roundtable on the development of a postgraduate diploma in maritime studies and the building of regional research collaborations.

Happy Nyerere Day
