Dubai Retail, under Dubai Holding Asset Management, unveils Skylight Mall, a new super-regional destination set to open in 2027 on Al Khail Road. Spanning 1.3 million sq. ft. of gross leasable area (GLA), the mall will feature more than 360 stores, making it the latest addition to Dubai Retail’s growing portfolio of 58 malls and lifestyle destinations across the emirate.

Recently had the chance to spend a day at Lusaka's elephant orphanage supported by @ifawglobal and wrote a short article on their efforts to rehabilitate them.
Best moment of the day in this video...

Strip away the adjectives and the article becomes a reluctant tribute to Emirati capability, performance and strategic reach.
The @FT’s “imperial” framing is sexy, but overly exaggerated.. A state with barely more than one million citizens is not colonising or governing Africa.
FT’s own reporting describes invited investment, infrastructure, trade corridors and execution at a scale few countries can match. This hardly an imperial design.
Berbera captures the real story: Emirati capital revived a declining port, built the road linking it to Ethiopia and helped turn it into sub-Saharan Africa’s most efficient port, as per The World Bank and S&P, both are cited in the article.
The gold story is tired and weakened by the article’s own numbers. Sudanese gold accounted for just over $1bn of a UAE gold market worth roughly $300bn.
The missing context is even more revealing: in 2024, almost 97 per cent of official gold exports from areas controlled by the Sudanese army also went to the UAE.
Dubai is the region’s trading infrastructure, used by both sides, rather than evidence of a uniquely predatory design.
Suspicion is a predictable reaction when a new middle power moves faster and executes better than established competitors.

Digital Dubai, through the Dubai Data and Statistics Establishment, announces that the emirate’s population reaches 4.580 million by the end of 2025, an increase of approximately 332,000 people compared to the end of 2024, representing a growth rate of 7.5%. This population growth reinforces Dubai’s position as one of the world’s leading destinations for investment, business, and talent.
I’ve been following this statistic since 2004 or so when they first announced it and it’s one of the most significant achievements of the @rta_dubai 👏
Very interesting - haven’t seen these numbers for previous years, have they published similar reports?

Hamdan bin Mohammed: During a meeting of The Executive Council, we approved a set of major initiatives and projects worth AED18 billion. These include the Dubai Cultural Strategy 2033, comprising 40 strategic initiatives; and the Dubai Customs Strategy aimed at further strengthening Dubai's position as a global trade hub. We also approved the First Al Khail Street Development Plan, which will deliver a new strategic corridor parallel to Sheikh Zayed Road, featuring a 15-kilometre elevated roadway, serving 2.6 million people.
Additionally, we approved the 'Dubai Population Now' Real-Time Population Census and Growth Monitoring Initiative, which provides real-time data to support decision-making following Dubai's population surpassing 4.58 million at the end of 2025, and the Emirati Talents Strategy in Private Education to create opportunities for 3,000 Emiratis by 2033. In addition, we approved the Dubai Investor Register, a unified platform for individual and institutional investors across the emirate, including the free zones.
We also approved a new visual identity for Dubai's address system, along with the launch of the Global Centre for Technology and Innovation in Islamic Finance. Under the leadership and vision of His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai has become synonymous with ambition and achievement. Our development journey continues, our momentum never slows, and our initiatives keep evolving. The future will always be brighter for Dubai and its people.
