Our new paper is out in @NatureComms
Polo-like kinase 1 is one of the master regulators of cell division. We found a low level of Plk1 activity is already present during S phase, and that this early activity sets the pace of DNA replication itself.

The logic is strikingly reminiscent of the Cdk–cyclin system: partially overlapping, stage-specific activators dictating when and where a single kinase acts.

The reason this was easy to miss comes down to how Plk1 is switched on. It has three independent co-activators, cytoplasmic Bora, and the centrosomal proteins Cep192 and Cenexin.
