founding designer @naturalpay

Today, @jerrylu is joining @naturalpay as our first GTM hire after spending the last five years investing at @maveron. Your career is long. I first met Jerry in November 2022 while pitching Ivella. Different company, different vision, and, frankly, a very different level of ambition and execution. When you’re in the throes of fundraising, it’s easy to become myopic. Someone passes and you think, “I’m never going to engage with them again.” Going on six years in the Valley, I can tell you that’s basically never how it works. I remember meeting Jerry and immediately liking his energy. We didn’t get to a deal, but we stayed in touch. Turns out the world had more in store for our story. As we started building out GTM at Natural, I kept thinking about how valuable it would be to have someone come from venture. Someone who had spent years talking to the exact customers we were selling to, and understood the landscape because they had spent years sitting on the other side of the table. The harder part was finding someone who was also a culture fit, and willing to put all of their eggs in one basket because they believed that deeply in the mission and vision. Turns out that person was Jerry. Jerry was already driving customers toward Natural before the first day of his onsite. By the time he showed up, it felt like he belonged here. Today is technically Jerry’s first day at Natural, but it already feels like he’s been here for a while. So excited to have him. He’s going to be a big part of our story. natural.com/blog/why-jerry-j…

It's easier to build for utility than whimsy. But I think more of us should try. My love letter to whimsy and products from @CashApp, @bumpbyamo, @pollenrobotics, and @tacobell. skop.finitynetwork.com/p/30d…

Today, @davidyiworks is joining @naturalpay as our Founding Talent hire after helping scale Ramp as their Director of Talent. I interviewed a lot of recruiters to find David. One of the beautiful, but challenging, parts about building a team is that recruiting, to me, is not primarily about parsing resumes for conventional signals of status or success. Building a team is about energy. My interviews tend to be far less about the work someone has done, and far more about the person. What motivates them. How they think. What they care about. What kind of energy they bring into a room. If you’re going to help scale Natural, you need to understand those things deeply enough to recognize who someone really is, whether they’re going to thrive here, and why they should want to be here in the first place. David is that person. Watching him come onsite, quickly understand the culture, dissect what motivates each person on the team, and introduce exactly the right amount of process to help us scale has been incredible. We’re going to be growing the team aggressively over the next few months, and I’m excited for a lot more people to get to know Natural through David. As part of that next phase of growth, we’re also expanding Natural to New York City. Going forward, we’ll be building teams in both San Francisco and New York. If you’ve been excited about what we’re building but geography has kept you from joining us, that’s changing. We have a lot of hiring to do. Read more about why David joined below. natural.com/blog/why-david-j…

Today, @kishansripada is joining @naturalpay as an engineer after founding a @ycombinator backed startup last year. Meeting Kishan, it was immediately obvious he was going to fit at Natural. He made it clear he only wanted to work on hard technical problems, and had strong opinions on economics, technology, and the future of the world. During his onsite, he fit naturally into the product engineering org. His time as a founder showed — when you’ve had to own the product, engineering, and strategy yourself, you tend to think about problems differently. His broader love for economics pairs especially well with getting to help shape the financial infrastructure that will eventually move a meaningful share of global payment volume. We’re super excited to have him on the team. It’s crazy to think I did YC five years ago now, but as an alum, I have a particular inclination to hire as many former founders as I can. If you’re a former founder looking for your next role, Natural is where you want to be. And if you eventually decide to leave and start something new, I’ll happily be your first angel check. natural.com/blog/why-kishan-…

Today, we're announcing that @naturalpay has raised up to a $100M credit facility from Upper90, on top of the $40M in equity we've raised. Payments isn’t just a software problem. At scale, it’s also a capital problem. This gives us even more capacity to build the best payments infrastructure for agents. If you’re building agents that need to move money and access credit, reach out. natural.com/blog/100m-credit…

i have this forming hypothesis that design is, at its core, just about noticing things. building on this thought, i think everyone is born a designer. anyone can notice. noticing is something anyone can learn and develop. the best designers i know just notice things more acutely than the average human. maybe some are naturally predisposed to it, but i believe it’s something anyone can become excellent at with practice. the more deeply you learn to notice, the more acute your understanding of the world becomes, and the more empathy you develop for both your environment and the humans in said environment. if more people feel empathy for their environment and other humans, i think we’d live in a better world.

we’re growing the design team at greptile 🦎 as the only designer, i’ve had the chance to go from putting a lizard on the homepage to shaping the product and brand. it’s been incredibly fun working at a company that encourages bold ideas and believes a developer brand can be just as creative as the product itself. if you care about craft, love building from zero, and want to help shape what’s next, my dms are open.

Today, @henryyin is joining @naturalpay. I first met Henry when he was starting @thinkwithmark. When I saw Mark for the first time, I remember thinking: “Wow. This is original, creative, and really well-executed.” A testament to Henry and his co-founder, @EasonTang23. So you can imagine my surprise when I found out they were still undergrads at USC. I reached out because at that point I knew I had to meet the two of them. At the time, I was still deep in the idea maze, trying to figure out what I wanted to spend the next decade of my life building (easily the most agitating period of my life). Henry was still building Mark, so we stayed in touch and went our separate directions. Over a year later, Henry messaged me saying he was in SF and asked if we could meet. He came by the office, and his energy was undeniable. He had this infectious optimism, a genuine curiosity about the world, and a clear desire to be the best. He stayed for the next few days to do a work trial, which turned into him joining the team for the summer. We’ve rejected every intern request we’ve ever gotten. Henry is the one exception. I see in him a better, more capable version of myself at 21. And I’m really excited to have him on this journey with us. He’s already taken one massive project end-to-end that’s launching in a couple weeks, and he’s got a lot more on the way. natural.co/blog/why-henry-jo…

hi hi hi network, doing this again omygosh. i’m still soft-looking for my next dream design role. otherwise, i may leave the US for real lol. what i’m looking for: - industry agnostic, but ideally category-defining companies rethinking how people interact with software in the age of ai, not just optimizing existing workflows - visuals, craft, and interaction design are core to the experience - a talent-dense team that geeks out about what they do and where design and engineering blur - room to break patterns and push the boundaries of the product - based in sf, nyc, or remote - sponsors visa incredibly thankful for this community and everyone who reached out after my last post.

Excited to announce @fliptexts’ $1.4M pre-seed, and that we’ve joined @a16z @speedrun! When @notolegv, @ajiang_xyz and I started building in January, we were stunned at how outdated money apps still are. So we built the finance-expert friend we always wished we had: one that fits you, earns its place, grows into the job, and lives just one text away. My financial life doesn’t look like anyone else’s. I’ve managed six figures for a school club, spent my formative years trading crypto, and I’m still too shy to ask my roommates to pay me back for WiFi. Flip starts by automating my monthly roommate bill, checking my wallets before I think to, nudging me to use my Dunkin credit before my Amex benefits expire, making sure my retirement accounts are stable, watching my cloud bills, scanning to see if my Netflix membership is *really* worth it, and finding discounts on late night food delivery. We're making sure that no matter what your goals are with money: saving more, or making more, Flip is there to help you achieve that. Couldn’t be more excited to build this with our partners @a16z @speedrun @andrewchen @emilybenn12 @tkexpress11 @samshank @ndrewlee @RKRigney @thehousefund @daveybloom @jfiance @pearvc @khalil_fuller @zfellows @cory

Today, @emnuelkassie joins @naturalpay as our second designer. In case you couldn’t tell, I’m a product and design obsessed founder. Especially in financial services, I always like to say that we’ll never be able to “buy” the brand reputation and trust a big bank has earned over a century. What we can do is earn that trust back through a seemingly never-ending number of small product and design details. We can’t prove on the surface how well our payments infrastructure or ledgering works. So the product surface area has to prove that we care, and that we take our mission and responsibility seriously. I first hired Emanuel in 2021, when I was coming out of YC and he was a sophomore in college. I reviewed over 1,600 portfolios and interviewed nearly 100 designers before hiring him. I was looking for someone visually excellent who could also think critically about product. Emanuel was that rare combination, and knows the importance of design well. In 2021, I had to convince him to leave school and throw himself into the deep end. It meant a lot that he was open to making that leap then. It means even more that he’s making it again now. It takes a lot of trust to hand someone your vision and let them bring it to life. I have that trust in Emanuel. Excited to be reunited for part two of the journey. natural.co/blog/why-emanuel-…

Excited to announce that @naturallycli is joining @naturalpay as Chief Compliance and Regulatory Officer. She was the first regulatory hire at Square, Stripe, and Ramp, where she most recently served as Chief Compliance Officer of Ramp Payments Corporation. She is one of the most important compliance operators in payments, full stop. As we build Natural into the defining financial institution for agentic payments, legal and compliance are core strategic functions here—not support functions. They are now our second-largest function behind engineering, and will remain that way for the foreseeable future. We are taking the hard path: building the financial systems of the future from the ground up, with as much ownership of the stack as possible across ledgering, risk, underwriting, money movement, and compliance. It is the only way to build something durable enough to define the standards for agentic payments over the long run. When I met CLI, it was immediately obvious she was built the same way we are: high standards, high conviction, and very serious about winning. Today she becomes employee number 12 at Natural. Time to win. natural.co/blog/cli-joins-na…

excited to take a very natural next step
Excited to announce that @krrishd is joining @naturalpay's engineering team today from @tryramp. At Ramp, Krish led payments and helped build the infrastructure behind bill pay, reimbursements, stablecoins, treasury, capital markets, and more. I met him randomly at a basketball game when Natural was 100 days old. He told me that he’d read the agentic payments memo that I wrote, and I immediately clocked him as an energetic fit for the team we were building. Right after that conversation, a mutual pulled me aside and said, “there are a few engineers that really matter at Ramp, and Krish is one of them.” So naturally, I spent the next four months convincing him to make the jump. Krish is one of the few people I’ve met who deeply understands money movement, can move up and down the technical stack with ease, and is so broadly interesting that you can talk with him for hours before realizing just how deep his technical knowledge really goes. During our work trial debrief walk (a ritual), one line really stuck with me: “there’s no fintech company going after anything nearly as ambitious as Natural. Either I’m joining you or starting my own thing, but the only thing I’d want to start is in agentic payments, and I think you’re doing it right.” I’m very glad that we now get to say “we” instead of “you,” and even more glad to have him on the team. If you want to join Krish, we’re still doubling the team. Email me: [email protected] natural.co/blog/why-krish-jo…

210 days ago, @naturalpay was just a one-pager and a memo. Today, we’re coming out of stealth. Natural is the agentic payments platform powering frictionless money movement between agents, businesses, and consumers. Wallets. Payments. Ledgering. Routing. Identity. Compliance. Credit. Observability. Risk. Everything needed to move money. Engineered for agents and designed for humans. These primitives give you the ability to transact without becoming a payments expert or stitching together a dozen fragmented tools. Huge thanks to our team of 10 (soon to be 25), our early investors, and the supporters who believed in this vision from the start. If you want to help shape how money moves over the coming decades, we’re hiring. And if you’re building agents you should probably be moving money too. Reach out. Read more about Natural and the products we’re launching in the blog below. natural.co/blog/introducing-… – at San Francisco, CA
