The UK has somehow convinced people that working full time and still being broke is completely normal. We've reached the point where having a job isn't enough anymore. You can work 40+ hours a week, do everything you're "supposed" to do, never miss a shift, and still spend the last week before payday checking your bank balance before buying a loaf of bread. Then if you dare complain, you're told to budget better, stop buying coffee or "just earn more." When did surviving become the reward for working full time? People aren't asking to be rich. They just want to pay their rent, cover their bills, buy food and maybe have something left at the end of the month without feeling guilty about it. Somehow that's now considered an unrealistic expectation.

Hi @andyburnham I spoke today to a friend whose father had Alzheimer’s. He told me that last year the council was paying around £900 a week for carers to visit four times a day, providing a combined total of about two hours of care per day. That works out at approximately £64 per hour of delivered care to the agency. While many care workers providing the actual visits are paid around £16 per hour. For comparison, an experienced NHS Band 6 nurse earns around £20 per hour. Why are taxpayers paying such high rates to private care providers when the frontline workers themselves receive a much smaller proportion of the cost? Would a publicly provided model, with qualified nurses and care workers employed directly by the NHS or local authorities, provide better value and more consistent support, rather than relying on care agencies that often deliver short, offer fragmented visits, charge a fortune, and make extortionate profits?

I don't think most people realise how badly the climate movement gave up a few years ago. We're breaking temperature records day after day and barely a peep. The last holdouts are mostly sitting in jail. They were absolutely right and still no one cares.

This is not journalism @nicholaswatt This is an embarrassment
Why on earth would a @BBC presenter interrupt an interview with the leader of a major political party to read out a private text message from a Reform MP on a completely unrelated topic? @Ofcom, can we look into this? I suspect bribery. They have form.

Andy Burnham can stop this. He isn't.
Around 50 arrested so far outside Westminster Magistrate’s Court as campaign to lift the ban on Palestine Action escalates today. Over 100 people are risking 14 year prison sentences by inviting support for a proscribed group. Full story here: defendourjuries.net/press-re…

Do you think people are realising now that climate change doesn’t mean more flip flops and ice cream, but possibly the total breakdown of human civilisation and society #wildfires

Gary Lineker. “We’ve seen pensioners being carted off the streets for holding placards, it’s utterly absurd what we’ve become.” There’s going to be more Palestine Action arrests this afternoon as well, and it’s already cost about £30 million. Burnham should end this nonsense.

Govt planning c. 100 new data centres by early 2030s, mostly in water stressed areas - with no legal duty to disclose how much water they use. Meanwhile Govt launches £75m publicity campaign to urge us to reduce water use & privatised water companies waste 19% thro leaks. Madness

The revelation that Sunak has paid £1M in tax in the last 3 years 0.13% of his £720m wealth. While the average person has paid about £45k or 14%, 100x as much. Should open your eyes to just how much and how blatantly the rich dodge tax
Readers added context they thought people might want to know
UK taxes are levied on income and capital gains, not net worth. Sunak paid £1.05m in tax on £4.77m income over three years (effective rate ~22%), not 0.13% of wealth. bbc.com/news/uk-politi… instituteforgovernment.org.uk/explainer/weal…

NEW: A convicted money launderer has operated at the highest level of UK politics for a decade. Why? Because Farage has enjoyed almost total impunity from the UK press. In my new piece for @thenerve_news, I expose the decade of denial that’s enabled him to act with impunity 1/

Welcome to the UK, where everyone seems to be earning money and nobody seems to have any. A return train ticket costs the same as a mini break abroad. A food shop requires a small loan. Rent rises every year. Bills rise every year. Insurance rises every year. The only thing that doesn't seem to rise is your wage. People are working full-time, doing overtime and picking up side hustles, yet still checking their bank balance before buying absolutely anything. This is supposed to be one of the richest countries in the world. So why does surviving here feel like a full time job on its own?

The UK economy basically works like this: Get paid £2,000. Give £900 to a landlord. Give £200 to the council. Give £150 to energy companies. Give £300 to supermarkets. Give £300 to car insurance and fuel. Spend the rest surviving until next payday. Then get lectured by someone who bought their house for £37,000 in 1988 about how you need to stop buying coffees and cancel subscriptions.
