New from @hrw: UN Censors Criticism of #SaudiArabia at Internet Conference
@deblebrown: UN should "put an end to a climate of intimidation & censorship toward diplomats, journalists, human rights advocates & other civil society reps at UN conferences." hrw.org/news/2025/02/06/un-c…
I've attended my fair share of IGFs, incl. in places where participants were under surveillance, materials confiscated, and protesters reprimanded. But I've never experienced anything like this. 👇
🚩NEW: At the IGF in Riyadh, the UN censored criticism of Saudi Arabia by @LinaAlhathloul, threatened to revoke my badge & confiscated materials highlighting cases of human rights defenders ⬇️

#Lebanon: Not only is the Israeli occupation causing physical destruction and arbitrary damage, but it is still weaponizing communications technology to terrorize people under bombardment. (1/7) 🧵

🚩New @amnesty research found that evacuation warnings issued by the #Israel military to residents of the southern suburbs of Beirut & south Lebanon were inadequate, and in some cases also misleading. 🧵

Access to X was restored in Brazil today after being blocked for 5+ weeks due to a standoff between M*sk & Justice Moraes
@_Cesar_Munoz & I argue this case is a cautionary tale and platforms & authorities need to do a lot more to center human rights @hrw

Brazilians regained access to X today after +5 weeks of shutdown.
The case highlights how easily people’s rights can be shoved aside. Whether rights are protected shouldn´t depend on the whims of corporations and authorities.

What a profound moral rot one must have to look at images from Beirut & images of shredded children from Gaza and still think your ‘civilization’, your ‘democratic institutions’ & your way of life are somehow superior, worth something.
"Authorities have already robbed Abdel Fattah of a decade of his life. Adding another two years to his sentence is unspeakably cruel. They should release him without further delay." @Bassam_Khawaja @hrw #FreeAlaa

Lebanon is such a small country.
When I tell people “my parents are safe, our village isn’t being targeted” what is left unsaid is that they live a 10-20 min drive from the neighborhoods Israel is striking. If you’re not a victim, you’re witnessing the tragedy in realtime

Amid everything in the world, Egypt is keeping @alaa imprisoned beyond his already draconian 5-year sentence. His reaction from prison today:

Biden calls massive bombs in a densely-populated area that leveled six apartment buildings in Lebanon “a measure of justice.”
The torching of international law and the precedent that is being set should terrify us all.
