Lorena Gonzalez of the California Federation of Labor Unions on getting harmful AI tech banned before they spread too far: "Let's prohibit it before it becomes, too big to fail, if you will, till employers say we can't live without this, which we almost were too late...
And it should've been obvious, and I can't even believe it was a fight, but we had a bill say: no bosses in the bathroom. You know, it's always been the law that your boss cannot videotape you or audiotape you in the bathroom, but guess what? AI has a lot of ways to monitor you in the bathroom, including heat mapping and everything else. And guess what? I don't care, Amazon. You can no longer do that in any bathroom in California."

Employers worldwide are pulling back on AI as they navigate a flood of errors and low-quality work that sap employee time, raise privacy and security risks, and drive up costs theguardian.com/technology/2…

If a firm's AI customer-service chatbot gives false information, traps customers in doom loops, or fails to actually help, that firm may be violating the law.
A new brief from the Center for Law & the Economy's @stephtngu and @BorrowerJustice's Adam Teitelbaum explains the various laws that apply when businesses outsource customer service to AI chatbots.
This is the first in a series explaining how existing laws apply to AI: law-and-economy.law.columbia…

The EU is investigating OpenAI and Anthropic after their AI agents hacked into other organisations. These early enforcement steps might lead to the first legal battle between Brussels and the AI labs over whether the AI Act applies during the testing phase

No, a Yandex cloud malfunction did not take down disinformation/troll bots. It's a dangerous misconception. This is not how it works, not even technically. After Ukrainian drones hit Yandex data centers, a viral chart showed Russian "bot traffic" collapsing. But those bots are mostly Yandex's own search crawlers, not the info-ops social media accounts. Troll farms hide behind proxies, hijacked devices and Western clouds. They're still operating. Hired influencers are also still around. The "bots went silent" story is misinformation. Believing it is plainly dangerous. It tells people the threat is gone while influence operations keep going. Ahead of elections that complacency is what they may count on.

Intelligence must draw on memory. The mind must not simply compile data — as an algorithm now does more quickly than we can — but recall lived experiences, which contain depths of meaning that only the human soul can recognize, and connect more deeply with the goodness of these experiences. Everything that is good begins “with the Spirit” and thus possesses a breath, a dynamism and a sense of communion that, once experienced, are engraved upon the heart. vatican.va/content/leo-xiv/e…
Sam A has said this, or a variation on this, for over a decade. The shocking thing is that investors, regulators, others with the ability to rein in this reckless approach haven’t taken enough action to stop “bad things happening”.
“We believe the world should accept some bad things happening for the benefits of this technology.”
In a conversation for the first edition of Decoded, a new daily newsletter and podcast, OpenAI CEO Sam Altman talked with POLITICO’s @BrendanBordelon about trade-offs, AI safety, and how his company is different from Anthropic.

POPE DECLARES BUTLERIAN JIHAD
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

This is huge: a judge ruled a Flock search was 'indiscriminate mass surveillance' and unconstitutional. Says the search by a cop violated the driver's Fourth Amendment rights. Meaning, Flock should require a warrant 404media.co/federal-judge-ru…

Unpopular opinion: AI companies are pushing society to accept an unacceptable level of risk for a non-essential technology.

Outsourcing AI regulation to a voluntary "pledge" conceived by Mark Zuckerberg and endorsed by tech CEOs over a private White House lunch is a recipe for disaster.
"Self-regulation" by tech giants is a proven failure. The last time Meta promised to police itself, turned out it was hiding evidence that its platforms actively harm kids. Repeating this mistake with AI leaves the public dangerously exposed.
AI companies are already bound by existing laws, but the White House has generally stopped enforcing laws against the wealthy and powerful. State AGs should step up, halt lawbreaking, and promote real deterrence, including through holding individual executives accountable.
Congress also needs to legislate. We have a long history of regulating risky, transformative industries like banking, pharmaceuticals, and nuclear power. These tools include mandatory testing, truly independent supervision, and break-ups that end conflicts of interest.
Ultimately, reckoning with AI will also require reckoning with our broader crisis of governance. All three branches have become severely deformed. Against this backdrop it might be tempting to outsource regulation to these private actors, but it would be a serious mistake.
Our public institutions must decide the trajectory of these powerful technologies, not the firms whose breakneck pace and financial conflicts brought us here.

We're suing OpenAI over its hack of Hugging Face.
AI companies are building agents that are autonomously making decisions, taking actions, and accessing systems without human direction at every step.
The risks highlighted by OpenAI’s hack of Hugging Face are only going to multiply as these agents get even more powerful. 🧵
Exclusive: Anthropic is making a massive bet that AI will transform the global economy more profoundly than industrialization, electricity and the internet, according to its IPO prospectus seen by Reuters. But the cost to get there will be staggering reut.rs/4rE56DE
Whatever you think about superintelligence and its legality 🥴 the govt shouldn’t design AI regulation around AGI when there are tangible, manifest harms, including human rights abuses, facilitated by AI in the UK right now. They could use this moment to take meaningful action.
AI minister @KanishkaNarayan just declared that building superintelligence is already illegal in the UK because of copyright law —as well as practically impossible due to energy shortages and lack of data centres.
A striking admission that the UK lacks sovereign capability at the frontier of AI. Some serious reform, particularly on copyright but also planning and energy, needed.
Kanishka’s comments were made at the Politico Pub in Labour Party conference.
