Trying to convince #chatgpt to write me some correct JWT token validation code in C#, 30 minutes in, I have to keep correcting it. The confidence with which it states false facts is frightening
Some exciting things coming up soo! But maybe only over there? It's been a fun ride on Twitter, but the future is decentralised! berlin.social/@ddotmunch
Almost 8 months into #fatherhood, and finally found some time to log back into Twitter. Let's see if I missed it! #parenting
« Perfection is achieved, not when there is nothing more to add, but when there is nothing left to take away »
And on another note...something in our biased world view (unless we are directed otherwise) causes us to add rather than subtract to solve a problem...explains why feature creep/increasingly complex, etc. is part of the way we typically roll... nature.com/articles/d41586-0…
“Human bandaid layers of management”, also famous and starring in lack of trust and lack of autonomy
Replying to @jjeffryes
The main reason, AFAIK, companies avoid remote is you can't fix bad remote processes with more human bandaid layers of management.
Instead you have to do things right, and not all companies will or can.
This expresses my driving principles as an engineering lead with a math background so well. I forgot how to use all the fancy formulas, but this doubt of the obvious and the fear of unknown unknowns is something of value for me every day on my job
Replying to @MathPrinceps @paulg
The serious study of mathematics teaches with exceptional ruthlessness the virtue of epistemological modesty. One learns to doubt what seems at first most obvious, and to fear errors due to unknown unknowns. One expects to be wrong at first, for reasons one cannot imagine.

Resilient services and infrastructure with Transient fault handling are so much harder than Event Sourcing itself.
But this is true for every thing.
Worse if focus is on impact and if impact is confused with visibility. Often engs with high impact don’t have the visibility of those who’re good in self-promotion. I’d rather have divergent leveling paths than a dysfunct eng leadership team not knowing their high impact engs
Replying to @mipsytipsy
unless you call them out acknowledge they may have very divergent leveling and promotion paths, people tend ot get all kinds of confused.
focus on impact, sure. how do we compare an eng who wrote a few dozen LoC that saved us millions with an eng who fixed siginup flow?
I’ve never quite understood fancy project or team names, I even don’t believe that it makes boring things less boring. Prefix with team name for some namespacing and give boring names: Zobo Mail Service, Zobo Scheduler, Zobo Gateway. Worked pretty well so far for our team Zobo
Reminds me about my time at @LuccaSoftware, a French startup with its origins in a vacation planning system for the overly complicated French vacation rules.
"A Modern Compiler for the French Tax Code", to appear at CC 2021
arxiv.org/abs/2011.07966
(1) The premise for this paper seems completely bonkers to me, and (2) this abstract is amazing 🤩

ALT In France, income tax is computed from taxpayers' individual returns, using an algorithm that is authored, designed and maintained by the French Public Finances Directorate (DGFiP). This algorithm relies on a legacy custom language and compiler originally designed in 1990, which unlike French wine, did not age well with time.

Hot take: C# should have made it harder to catch exceptions, which would have helped to encourage them being used only for true panic situations. Everything else should have be exposed as Result / Either.

Here’s a clever alternative to ∃ℝ-complete Christmas baking.
A Happy Christmas to all my 238 followers! Here's just what you need, a Christmas-themed tessellation frieze cookie roller, from Monopol Auro, of Germany. The designer is unknown. It dates from at least 1982. It’s widely available on eBay for about £20.

Pretty much my everyday struggle these days. And the variety in my org is huge, pretty much comes down to how much the EM shields her engineers from overly ambitious business stakeholders who ask about the 9s behind the comma but got no clue about o11y and CD
Replying to @mipsytipsy
But I admit it's a hard call to make and defend. You're asking the leadership org to accept a slowdown on their roadmap and less stability upfront for an indeterminate length of time, in order to implement something that runs absolutely counter to our instincts as humans!
10 minutes after I read this twee, I managed to use "It's not chess, it's farming". That's why I love twitter - It gives me new ways of expressing things I stand for.
Good thread over here about how Taiwan dealt really well with the pandemic so far and to why calling Taiwan’s electronic tracing vigor the act if a « repressive regime « is merely a case of orientalism
Replying to @joshiunn
Also, in Germany, all customers need to put down their names, phone number & address whenever they sit down in a restaurant, bars or café. I would feel violated with all these random venues having access to my information. Yet Taiwan is one conducting "intrusive data tracking".

Talking about politics at work drives company-wide initiatives like Diversity and Inclusion.
Rather than making excuses, at Microsoft, the company searched for the root problem, hypothesized solutions and put different efforts in place.
