How do #NZ Govt’s law & order changes line up with the evidence: in short, ⁦@dchengnz⁩’s devastating report shows they don’t, & the crime “figures” to which they claim to be responding are either highly dubious or beyond any Govt’s ability to change: nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/h…

Some encouraging trends noted on diversion from prosecution on drug charges by police in this analysis by ⁦@dchengnz⁩, but much more can be done to fulfil mission of 2019 legislation which aimed to have a health-based approach to drug use/possession: nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/r…

Not exactly the epic eating I was salivating over in anticipation of covering the PM’s Singapore and Japan trip … but I’ll take it.

Excellent thread about what a post-peak wave might look like and the factors at play. For a NZ context, see nzherald.co.nz/nz/special-re… Special report: What will our lives be like on the other side of Omicron Mountain?
COVID update: Based on European case increases, the US could see a new rise in COVID cases over the Spring. The wave is likely to look different in several ways. 1/

One last Covid feature for the year from me: is the PM being over cautious, or is the MoH way off in its risk radar? Covid 19 Delta outbreak: It looked liked Jacinda Ardern was shunning public health advice, but the opposite is true nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/c…

I know you've been wondering how contact-tracing has actually performed in the first part of this outbreak. Well, after an OIA request and follow up from the Ombusdman, I can finally tell you it didn't do that well ... nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/c…

Also worth noting that contact tracing capacity has actually expanded since then and Sir Brian Roche is confident the system will cope with whatever happens over summer, though he caveats that with we'll only really know when whatever happens actually happens. /ends

Furthermore: Ombudsman finds refusal to release contact tracing data under OIA unreasonable and has asked @minhealthnz to please explain and apologise.

The MoH graph from @dchengnz's story in today's Herald. The thing to look at is Auckland's steep increase in cases at the beginning. If this were cricket, Auckland Delta would have come out blazing, lost a bunch of wickets and never threatened the target. Lockdown did work.

There are about 120,000 people 12 and older receiving mental health and addiction support. Vaccination coverage among them is far lower than the general population. And DHB help to reach them, as @nznep explains, has been a bit of a ‘postcode lottery’. /1 nzherald.co.nz/nz/politics/t…

There are other measures that will help, including making sure contact tracing, testing and case management - at hospital, MIQ or at home - are as good as can be. But given how stochastic the virus is, there’ll also be an element of luck /ends
