Why the fuck are Indians hated so much? What have they done to deserve this level of hatred?
Have Indians promoted terrorism? Have they colonized your countries? Enslaved your people? Stolen your homes? Taken away your families? Kidnapped your children? What exactly have millions of ordinary Indians done to deserve this much racism and hostility?
Is it because they're educated, intelligent, ambitious, hardworking, and competing for the same jobs as you? Since when did intelligence and ambition become crimes? Since when did working hard to build a better life become a reason to be hated?
If your problem is job displacement, then why aren't you directing the same anger toward artificial intelligence?
Why not question AI? Why not question ChatGPT, Claude, Grok, Anthropic, OpenAI?
AI has the potential to displace far more jobs than Indian immigrants ever could. Yet somehow, the Indian engineer, the Indian student, the Indian doctor, and the Indian worker become your enemies.
Why? Because it's easier to target a human being with a different skin colour or accent than to confront the actual economic forces changing your world?
And understand one thing clearly.
If an Indian refuses to engage with your racism, if they ignore your insults, if they choose not to respond to your hatred, it doesn't mean they lack a spine.
It means your hatred isn't worth their time.
Indians don't owe you an apology for being educated, ambitious, hardworking, successful, or simply existing.
Being Indian is not a crime. Being successful is not a crime. And your insecurity is not a justification for racism.

There is an especially outlandish conspiracy theory that oncologists are hiding the cure for cancer
Its proponents must think us particularly noble, then, when we sacrifice our lives to keep the secret: forgoing a panacea and succumbing to the very disease we treat
Dr. Shroff is not the only “wounded healer” I’ve known, but her legacy is far more than the wretched illness that claimed her own life too soon
She did her very best to push oncology forward, especially for patients with notoriously difficult-to-treat biliary tract cancers (a close relative, anatomically and sometimes pathophysiologically, to pancreatic adenocarcinoma)
I remember her incredible humility to stand at the podium at one of our largest scientific conferences and admit that a triplet therapy had not produced the benefits she had hoped for, allowing biological plausibility to cede to data yielded from the clinical trial she conceived & ran
Our field is full of such examples of good ideas failing to reach fruition, but we can only get better by admitting what’s not working as well as promoting true advances
When the history books are written, most, if not all chemo will look like grand folly, akin to our modern view of, say, blood-letting
But it is because of visionary physician-scientists like Rachna that we are making any progress at all: doing the best we can today while realizing there must be a better way and testing rigorously our ideas of how we might get there
May she be remembered in part for her tireless work, born out of irrepressible hope and true caring for her own patients as well as ones she never met (she never failed to kindly & helpfully answer a question I posed to her when I faced a management conundrum in her niche of cholangiocarcinoma)
RIP to a dear colleague (link in post below to a fund for young investigators named & bestowed in her honor)
We join the oncology community in mourning the passing of Dr. Rachna T. Shroff, a renowned GI cancers expert and a dedicated ASCO volunteer. We are humbled by her dedication and strive to honor her legacy of commitment and altruism.

My advice for the newish interns.
Take responsibility.
The right mentality, nothing will happen unless I do it. Check everything with the source, patient and raw data (labs, imaging reports etc).
Do not trust anyone (sometimes even your attending) and independently verify.

It's funny seeing some academic doctors complain that today's medical students and residents are too soft. Some of these docs see like 10 patients a week and don't come near a patient without an NP buffering zone.

“Right to Try 2.0” gets the problem right and the solution wrong. N-of-1 gene editing needs faster, smarter regulation, not an end run around #FDA. When the treatment may be the first human exposure to a bespoke genetic medicine, oversight is a safeguard, not red tape. h/t @HollyLynchez @SteveJoffe @AhrensNicklas @kiranmusunuru #GeneTherapy #GeneEditing jamanetwork.com/journals/jam…

1 in 8 new cancers worldwide is caused by an infection.
Study in @TheLancetOncol shows an estimated 2.3 million new cancer cases globally in 2024 (~12% of all diagnoses) were directly attributable to infectious agents.
When we talk about cancer risk, the conversation usually centers on genetics, aging, and lifestyle. But these findings highlight a powerful, actionable reality: Infection control IS cancer prevention.
Key Takeaways from the IARC Study
Just 5 Pathogens Drive the Vast Majority of Cases:
Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori): ~760,000 cases (primarily gastric/stomach cancer)
Human Papillomavirus (HPV): ~760,000 cases (cervical, anal, head & neck cancers)
Hepatitis B & C (HBV/HCV): Major drivers of liver cancer
Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV): Linked to nasopharyngeal cancer, stomach cancer, and lymphomas
Updated Evidence: The analysis incorporated 12 infectious agents in total, expanding on associations for HIV, Merkel cell polyomavirus, and the link between EBV and gastric cancer.
A Massive Global Health Equity Gap: While infection-related cancers occur everywhere, the heaviest burden falls on low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) where access to routine screening, sanitation, and vaccines remains uneven.
The most compelling aspect of this data is that many of these cancers are preventable or treatable with tools we already possess today:
Vaccination: Scaling up global coverage for HPV and Hepatitis B.
Early Screening & Antibiotics: Eradicating H. pylori before it leads to chronic inflammation and stomach cancer.
Antiviral Access: Expanding access to curative Hepatitis C therapies and suppressive HBV treatments.
Saving millions of lives doesn't always require waiting for novel drug discoveries—it requires closing the implementation gap between existing medical science and global healthcare delivery.
Where should healthcare leaders and policy makers focus first to close this gap? #PublicHealth #Oncology #CancerPrevention #GlobalHealth #IARC #LancetOncology #HealthcareLeadership #PreventativeMedicine

My salute to the Indian pilot Captain Smit Machchhar for his extraordinary bravery.
Despite being stabbed and seriously injured, he fought back, resisted, opened the cockpit door, and enabled passengers and crew to overpower the attacker — preventing a catastrophic mid-air disaster.
He saved the lives of 174 people, including Israeli citizens and other nationals.
I wish Captain Machchhar a speedy and full recovery.
He is a true hero.
