This book is fantastic. Couldn’t agree more; a must read for anyone interested in WW II naval history. Had the great fortune to meet Mr. Hornfischer at the Indy airport. He was so gracious & took the time to talk about his next book, Fleet at Flood Tide. Sad he is gone.

If you're interested in the full story of Taffy 3 and their amazing defense of the landing ships, I cannot recommend this book too much.
It's extraordinary.

Uncommitted 2027 forward Clark Emly has seen his game grow since last season. Clark has good size and a high basketball IQ with really good passing ability. Some D3 or NAIA program igoing to end up getting a solid pickup that has flown under the radar so far #GTBH

🚨 This could be HUGE for college wrestling.
The Senate passed the Protect College Sports Act 77-22 last night and sent it to the House.
Among the biggest changes:
• Athletes get ONE transfer without losing eligibility
• Transfer a SECOND time? You sit out the following academic year
• Exceptions include a head coach leaving, your sport being cut, graduate-degree transfers, or sexual assault/harassment
• Five-year eligibility framework
• New federal NIL/recruiting rules
• Increased protections for Olympic sports like wrestling
This still has to pass the House and become law, but it could be a massive change to the current college wrestling landscape.
We'll dive into it on the next Basch & The Brain.

One of the grandest men of the old guard, Gordon Johncock. As a driver, he was one of a kind, with an unassuming manner. To him, he wasn't doing anything that special..... and he was. Rest in peace my friend.

When they built the new children's hospital in Iowa City, they put a window on the 12th floor.
It looks directly into Kinnick Stadium.
So a fan named Krista Young had an idea and posted it on a Facebook page called Hawkeye Heaven. What if, at the end of the first quarter, everybody turned around and waved at the kids.
That was 2017. They have done it at every home game since.
Here is what it actually looks like.
The first quarter ends. The scoreboard tells people it is time. And then roughly 70,000 people in that stadium turn their backs to the field, face the hospital, and wave.
Not just the fans. The Iowa Hawkeyes players wave. The coaches wave. The officials wave. The people working concessions wave.
And so does the other team. Opposing players, opposing coaches, opposing fans who drove in from another state to root against Iowa, all of them turn around and wave at a building full of sick children.
Up on the 12th floor, the kids and their families are at the glass waving back. Some of them are in wheelchairs. Some of them are holding signs. Some of them are too sick to be down there and this is the closest they will get to a game.
The University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital treats kids with cancer, with heart conditions, with things that keep a family living in a hospital room for months at a time. Families come in from all over the state and end up staying far longer than anybody told them they would.
For those families, Saturday in the fall means 70,000 strangers stop what they are doing and look at your kid.
It won a national award the first year they did it, which is nice but is not the point.
The point is the detail nobody planned. From 2017 to 2022 the same song played during the wave. Then they changed it, and now the music is chosen by that game's Kid Captain, a patient the program honors each week.
So the song the stadium hears is picked by a child in that hospital.
Think about what a 9 year old picks when somebody tells them 70,000 people are going to hear their song.
Iowa does not win every game. Kinnick can be a miserable place to watch football on a cold November afternoon, and Iowa fans will tell you that themselves, at length.
But for about 60 seconds at the end of the first quarter, the entire building agrees on something.
It cost nothing. Nobody had to donate anything. A fan posted an idea on Facebook, a hospital happened to have a window in the right place, and now it is the best minute in college football.
Every stadium in America has a hospital somewhere near it.
Iowa just decided to look.

Rick Pitino was asked what stops people from being great. His answer was one word.
"Ego stops greatness. I call it edging greatness out."
"In a spiritual sense, ego is edging God out. But ego is edging greatness out."
And he made a key distinction:
"I'm not talking about confidence. You have to be a confident person."
"But ego really gets you to where you think you've arrived. You think you know it all. You stop learning. You stop listening."
That's the trap. Confidence keeps you hungry. Ego convinces you that you've already made it. You lose your hunger and humility.
"Learning and listening are important for great leaders. Great leaders have to listen and they have to continue to learn and surround themselves with people that are better than them."
EGO = Edging Greatness Out
The moment you think you've arrived is the moment you stop growing.
Stay confident. Stay humble. Never stop learning.
