Newsletters are awesome. I read a lot of them. @genmon writes a legendary one. Still one of the best ways to build a community. So we’ve started one @inanimate_tech called Lab Notes.

🧪 Lab Notes is a record of our work as we build and ship Inanimate. It’s an update on what we are working on, plus what influences, informs, and inspires us.
We’re starting off with a classic format. A done list + likes and links.
Come with us, as we build a British Sony for the AI Era!
What if you could change device behaviour, just by talking to it?
Create an app. Change it. Edit it. Add personal context. Then completely reinvent what the device is for.
WORKS is our limited release of the first ever Promptable Products - physical devices inhabited by AI agents that understand what you want and do what you mean.
WORKS launch in November 2026.
This is a demo (using a ESP32 device from @M5Stack) showing one possible experience you can create.
We’re building @inanimate_tech in public.
Jump in, it's gonna be weird.

Excited about the @inanimate_tech PREVIEW Series. Landing on Instagram from today - instagram.com/reel/Derwh5fI5…
Join us in the @inanimate_tech lab as WORKS comes together. We shot this yesterday!
WORKS is our limited release of Promptable Products at @inanimate_tech: physical devices inhabited by AI agents that understand what you want and change their behaviour when you ask.
Right now...
• Components arriving from around the world
• Final design details taking shape
• Provisioning and claiming process is nearly complete
• Richer interfaces coming to our screens
• Devices talking to each other and responding almost instantly
This is WORKS in Progress: It's All Coming Together in the Lab

We let an agent express itself IRL through a device with a face. Weird. But we learned a lot.
Meet Face P1, one of our more recent @inanimate_tech prototypes.
Two screens for eyes, another for a mouth, a mic array, and a nose printed on the circuit board.
@genmon asked it to scroll truisms across its mouth. It started “talking” to us, and those words became surprisingly interesting to reflect on.
“Every system protects itself first.”
Like: What do you mean? And why are you saying this now?!
It’s teaching us about how people want to relate to agents and whether those are relationships we want our products to encourage, or whether we think they are problematic.
This is Prototyping: "Why We Made an AI Device with Eyes and a Mouth."

We need to lock the designs for our five AI devices. Step inside the room where decisions are being made and biscuits are being eaten.

Here is me and @genmon working through the hard choices with our industrial designers.
A screen we love but might struggle to source. A prototype that feels too big. Our logo looking good enough to temporarily distract us from the risks.
We’re sharing the process as it happens, while there’s still plenty to figure out.
This is WORKS in Progress EP5: The Hard Choices Behind Our AI Devices.
👏 Very nice. Someone was going to build the post-MacMini agentic home server. Might as well be these dudes.
