Man, I appreciate all the love Willie McGee has been getting this weekend.
He was the kind of MVP we’ll probably never see again; a fast guy with a good stick who could hit for high average, drive in runs without massive power, and generally find a ton of ways to help his team.
Plus he looked great in those powder blue uniforms and rocked that double earflap helmet, which switch-hitters don’t really do anymore.
An old school MVP! Great career.
Not enough people talk about Willie McGee
• 2254 hits, .295 BA, 352 SB, 3029 TB
• 1985 NL MVP, 1982 WS Champ, Silver Slugger
• 4x All-Star, 3x Gold Glover, 2x Batting Champ
• Led NL position players in WAR (8.2) in 1985
• Wore one number (#51) for his entire career
• 84 out of 100 on @baseball_ref HOF monitor
• Along with Eddie Murray, became part of a fun statistical anomaly in 1990; due to a mid-season trade from St. Louis to Oakland, McGee led MLB in hits without leading either league, and Murray led MLB in batting average without leading either league
• One of just three players during the Live Ball Era to record a season with at least a .350 BA, .500 SLG, 215 hits, and 50 SB; one of just two (along with Tony Gwynn) to do so in the last hundred years

NEW: Interesting statement on affirmative action released just now by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Perry of Chicago, the head of the US Catholic bishops' Ad Hoc Committee Against Racism.
“Education is a gift, an opportunity, and an important aspect of our democracy that is not always within the reach of all, especially racial and ethnic groups who find themselves on the margins. It is our hope that our Catholic institutions of higher learning will continue to find ways to make education possible and affordable for everyone, regardless of their background. As St. Katharine Drexel, patroness and pioneer in Catholic education, was quoted as saying in our pastoral letter Open Wide Our Hearts: The Enduring Call to Love, “If we wish to serve God and love our neighbor as well, we must manifest our joy in the service we render to Him and them. Let us open wide our hearts. It is joy which invites us. Press forward and fear nothing.”
