Peace in Ukraine is easy - Putin can stop his invasion any time.
President Zelensky and the Ukrainian people are on the frontline fighting for the right of free people to resist tyranny and murder.
America's history of fighting for freedom is a beacon of hope to the world. Presidents Rooseveldt, Eisenhower, Reagan and more have stood up to tyrants.
They remind us why we support the people of Ukraine.

A Statement of Conscience on October 7
I will not start by saying ‘as a Muslim’ or ‘as an imam’, but as a human being.
On October 7, over 1,200 innocent people were killed in a single day. Families were shot in their homes. Young people out dancing were hunted across open fields. Over 250 people, including children and the elderly, were dragged into Gaza as hostages. I think of a mother hiding in a safe room with her baby’s mouth covered. I think of a father listening as the line went quiet. I think of families who waited month after month for someone to come home, only to receive a coffin. I didn’t need my faith to recognize the evil of what happened. My heart told me first.
But I’m a Muslim and an imam, and I owe the world one honest sentence: what was done that day was a crime against God. God teaches that whoever kills one innocent soul, it is as if he had killed all humanity.
This day has an author: Yahya Sinwar. He planned it, ordered it, and knew what would follow. Every death of that day and war he started rests on him and Hamas leaders who sat in tunnels and foreign hotels and called slaughter a victory. It rests on every Palestinian leader who cheered, excused, handed out sweets, or said nothing. They chose this. They own it.
But Sinwar did not invent himself. He was the fruit of a tree planted almost a century ago by the Muslim Brotherhood. Hamas named itself in its founding charter as the Brotherhood’s branch in Palestine. The Brotherhood’s poison is slow. It arrives through study circles, youth camps, charity boxes, and kind words to lonely young men. Drop by drop, it teaches him that his religion is a political party, his neighbour is his enemy, the Jew is the cause of his sorrow, and God is pleased by rage. By the time the gun arrives, the soul is already taken.
I have seen this poison in mosques where sermons became rallies and young men could recite slogans but not sit still for a verse on mercy. Every people that let the Brotherhood in has paid in blood and ruined generations. It has never built anything it did not first set on fire.
Behind Hamas stands another hand: the IRGC. It was the IRGC’s money, weapons, and training that turned a hateful idea into an army. One calls itself Sunni and the other Shia, and they may curse each other’s creeds, but they are united in what they worship. It is not God. It is power. The same IRGC that armed the killers of October 7 shoots Iranian girls for showing their hair, hangs young men for asking to be free, and has left graves from Tehran to Damascus to Beirut. They speak in God’s name. So did Pharaoh speak in the name of heaven.
So let me say this clearly. Hamas and the IRGC are not merely enemies of Islam. That would be too small a charge, as if their crime were only against us. They are enemies of God. God is the Giver of life, yet they deal in death. God calls Himself the Most Merciful, yet they have made cruelty a sacrament. God honoured the children of Adam, yet they look at a child and see a target or a shield. To murder what God created and sign His name to it is the oldest blasphemy.
And we Muslims have been too quiet. Some of us were afraid. Some told ourselves it was not our business. Some, God forgive them, felt something other than horror that morning and never confessed it. Silence was the soil this poison grew in. I will not add to it.
So on this anniversary, let us say plainly what our scripture already says. The Jews are not our enemies. They are our cousins in Abraham, and their dead were created by the same God who created us. Today belongs to them: the murdered, the hostages, and families who still set a place at the table. To them I say: I am sorry for what was done to you by men who used the words of my prayers. You’re not alone in your grief or remembrance.
The enemies of God are those who murder in His name. We know their names. It is time we said them from our own pulpits, in our own voices, before they speak for us again.

Meaningless words when the opportunity to *show* Jews you stand with them & not their persecutors presents itself & you refuse to take it.
Three years on from the October 7 attacks on Israel, we remember those who were senselessly killed by Hamas terrorists.
The impact of the attacks has been felt not just in Israel, but in Jewish communities across the world who still bear the burden of the tragic events that day.
In the years since, we have seen a disturbing rise in antisemitic behaviour in the UK.
A year ago we witnessed a horrifying terrorist attack on the Heaton Park Hebrew Congregation in Manchester, with further attacks against Jewish people and institutions since.
I want Britain’s Jewish community to hear this from me directly. We stand with you. Abuse and violence against you, in any form, will not be tolerated. Not on our streets, not online, not in our schools or universities.
That’s why we are funding protection for synagogues, schools and community buildings, and why we will come down hard on antisemitism wherever it is found - in classrooms, on campuses and in neighbourhoods.
At home, we are committed to protecting our citizens from vile hatred. Abroad, we continue to work towards a two-state solution, with Israelis and Palestinians living side by side in peace and security.
An attack on Jewish people in Britain is an attack on all of us. Antisemitism has no place in this country, and we will do everything we can to stamp it out.

This from Blair reminds how the greatest iniquity of attempts to frame Zionism as ‘racism’ is it’s been Arab & Palestinian leadership refusals to accept any Jewish state alongside a Palestinian state which has prevented self determination for Palestinians NOT the other way round

I did a video for my Instagram followers to explain why I had interrupted their normal programming of dogs & dinners to spam them on the dangers of the Greens ‘Zionism is Racism’ policy. It’s because if you care about racism at all you have to care about antisemitism.

The 2024 Budget raised the rate of capital gains tax. CGT receipts from that tax year *doubled*.
Looks like a triumph - but actually it was a failure.
And it means CGT reform is dead. A prudent Chancellor won't touch CGT.
A 🧵 on the CGT paradox:
The reality of a tax and spend government. Big ideas are all well and good. You have to pay for them. And you don’t tax your way to the growth that will be needed to fund those big ideas.
Exclusive: Andy Burnham has tasked Louise Casey and John Healey with plugging a multi-billion pound hole in his social care plan, after aides warned it could be delayed until the end of the next decade
The Treasury estimates that changes to the state pension outlined by Burnham will only raise around £5 billion a year by the end of the next parliament in 2034, according to people familiar with the matter
That is well short of what’s needed to pay for a free-at-the-point-of-use personal care service. The £15b a year savings from scrapping the triple lock only arrive in 2040
Burnham has asked Casey and Healey to look at how to fill the funding gap until then. He’s ruled out tax rises and more borrowing
Currently, there is no plan to pay for the care policy before 2040, government officials told Bloomberg. Without one, the implementation would have to be delayed to the late 2030s, they said
Another problem is that Burnham will simultaneously have to raise tens of billions of pounds to meet Britain’s NATO obligations to spend 3.5% of GDP on defence by 2035
The IFS has said that in order to meet the commitment the UK will need to find an additional £25 billion each year by 2035 in today’s terms
That leaves tens of billions of pounds of extra spending in the next parliament that will need to be funded
Burnham suggested in an interview with @BethRigby on Wednesday that the care plan could be delayed or phased to make it affordable

Someone tell him that people without jobs can’t afford mortgages. And that the problem is supply, not demand.
Let's be honest.
A lot of young people have stopped believing they'll ever own their own home.
That's what happens when rents are high, house prices are high, and saving for a deposit feels impossible.
My Labour government is stepping in to help.
With Your First Home, first-time buyers will be able to buy a new-build home with a deposit of just 2.5%.
Because hard work and saving should count for something.
And because the dream of owning your own home shouldn't belong only to those with help from the bank of Mum and Dad.

Accusing room full of British Jews of being “genocide supporters” purely because they support right of Israel to exist is so off the charts mad. Such dangerous rhetoric in context of deadly attacks on British Jews on exactly this phoney pretext. It should be condemned by all.
Last night there was a Holborn & St Pancras hustings hosted by @BoardofDeputies and @JewishLondon.
Instead of his usual adoring groupies, Zack Polanski got to hear from the Jews he spends his time these days largely avoiding.
The Green Party took it as well as you'd expect.

This is shameful. It’s so shameful it looks purposeful. This is the regime which openly slaughtered tens of thousands of innocent civilians for *protesting* & continues to put them to death daily. Teenagers sent to the gallows. Ed Miliband is a disgrace.
The most heinous crimes are being committed by Russia, yet many gutless wimps at the UN would not even do Zelenskyy the courtesy of attending his address. Disgraceful.
For almost five years now, Russian generals have been trying to carry out Putin’s crazy order to seize our eastern land – the Donetsk region.
And just this year, from January through August, the Russian army lost 248,964 people on the battlefield in Ukraine. In 8 months. 248 thousand. Killed and badly wounded. Twenty-one countries in the world have smaller populations than the number of Russian troops lost in just these 8 months.

36k+ civilians slaughtered in days by Iranian regime while UN sat on its hands despite having unanimously agreed on need to act in circumstances *exactly* like that under Responsibility to Protect Protocol. Where were the voices urging action & damning UNSC veto on R2P?

This is simply false. There was no documented “day one” offer by Hamas to release all the hostages “unconditionally.”
Contemporary reporting describes negotiations over exchanges: Israeli women and children for Palestinian terrorists, and later broader releases in return for pauses, additional terrorist prisoners and other concessions. Nothing was unconditional.
I say this as a hostage family member who served as an international envoy for the hostage families and was privy to some of the discourse behind closed doors with relevant stakeholders. Those conversations concerned negotiations, conditions, categories of hostages and concessions, not the simplistic narrative you now declare “well established and proven.”
Hamas did not even treat many civilian men as civilians. My brother-in-law, Omri Miran, was a civilian father kidnapped from his home in Kibbutz Nahal Oz, in front of his wife and two little girls. He was held for 738 days, physically tortured, deprived of food and water, and psychologically abused.
Hamas used Omri and other beautiful human beings as bargaining chips: women, children, the elderly, civilian men, soldiers, Israelis and foreigners. Taking civilians hostage is a war crime, and captured soldiers cannot lawfully be held as hostages to coerce concessions either.
There is plenty to criticise about the Israeli government’s conduct, including decisions made during negotiations, even if those were ultimately decisions for a democratically elected government to make. Hostage families have hardly been silent about them, and many of us still demand accountability and the establishment of a national commission of inquiry.
But none of that transfers responsibility from the perpetrators: Hamas and its accomplices, and the state actors that funded and sponsored their activities.
That is what makes your rhetoric so repulsive. You erase Hamas’s agency, recast conditional negotiations as an unconditional “offer to release them on day one,” and shift responsibility from the hostage-takers to the society they attacked.
Hamas kidnapped these people, categorised them according to their value, demanded concessions for them, abused them and held people like Omri for years.
Turning that into “Israel refused to save them because it wanted vengeance” is not an established fact. It is an inversion of perpetrator and victim that sanitises Hamas’s responsibility for one of its most grotesque crimes, a distortion you have pushed in bad faith since the war Hamas launched on October 7.
Replying to @Aizenberg55
Hamas offered to release them on day one, as now know, and Israel refused because they wanted war and vengeance over saving the hostages. This is now well established and proven, despite the lies from shills like you over the past three years
More hot air and no action. A strong UK with a determined leader would remind those present whose countries do not support this view that they are not welcome until they do. And if they have no intention of supporting it, they should be summarily removed from the organisation.
Farcical. The UN is merely a tub-thumping talking shop. All the time useful idiots like Guterres speak the language of peace and equality whilst holding the SecGen position, yet choose to share the floor with tyrannical regimes like Russia and Iran, the UN cannot lecture anyone.
Peace is far more than the absence of conflict.
It's the presence of restraint of power by law.
It's the recognition, as enshrined in the @UN Charter, that force cannot be the final arbiter of whose lives, rights & future matter.
Amid increasing conflicts around the world, my message to world leaders at #UNGA today:
We must defend the Charter without double standards.
Protect civilians without exception.
Ensure humanitarian access without obstruction.
Shield humanitarian personnel without fail.
Advance nuclear non‑proliferation & disarmament without delay.
And demand accountability without fear or favour.

Burnham could face these very questions far sooner than any of us might wish, while he & Ed Miliband preen & grandstand at the UN. How much are *we* prepared to undermine NATO by demurring on whole concept of showing military strength? After having damned Trump for similar.

I suggest any leader in any country in the world who refused to respond militarily to such an attack, if they are in fact telling the truth rather than outright lying, would be replaced quickly by someone prepared to protect their population. It raises all kinds of questions about what kinds of threats PM Burnham would respond to if not that. Military responses to serious threats are rarely without threat to civilian populations. Would PM Burnham not have attacked German cities in WWII? Would he have refused to join coalition of countries fighting ISIS?
