For this work you must be diligent, comfortable with good faith disagreement, and if possible a good writer. A good colleague offers earnest and direct criticism, rather than agrees for the sake of agreeing.

As there’s pedantry about @Tesla flying, let’s do it properly:
The reference point for the world’s first flight was Wright’s at 12 seconds and 120ft.
Beat either of those and it’s surely, minimally, flight
Reminds me of the Super Metroid game guide. Written to look like justified text, but it isn’t. I assume the author had a method to make this less time intensive that it seems

Gillian Anderson reveals that The X-Files creator spent nine years manipulating her dialogue into weird geometric shapes, banning all "widows" from her script pages
"Chris Carter came up to me who was directing the feature. He looked at my sides where my lines were, and he said, 'Look, no widows'"
"No widows on your little paragraphs that each character has. The word went all the way to the end with the period, so there wasn't, you didn't like end halfway through that line"
"So it was a perfect rectangle. So the dialogue was designed visually for nine years"
“Loving language and loving syllables. Kwon seems to think these are the same thing. But language is more than the sounds it makes.”
It’s inadvertent, admittedly, but I’ve not seen a better description of a primary fault line in hip hop
This is the most satisfyingly analytical essay I've read about literary style... ever?

We’ve discovered that mathematicians enjoy having the social capital and prestige of being a mathematician more than they like maths being done. Likely worth considering that this applies across fields, and isn’t limited to AI as a competitive threat
The lion in our coat of arms grows increasingly ironic with each passing government
This is a core aspect of leadership that we forgot. You’re supposed to be out having high conviction discussions.
The public isn’t always right and they need to know it, but you can’t dictate to them at a distance (hated), and avoiding issues to win popular opinion is weak too
Still all to play for
how has the uk ended up with no frontier lab of its own. we have the talent, the best universities, and london sitting there as the pipeline from research to funded company. the vcs are here. every part of it is here.
but we have the highest industrial electricity prices of any developed country, four times what american firms pay and 50% more than france, and we leech off french nuclear to keep the lights on. and where’s our mistral. ai? we had one. deepmind was founded in london in 2010 and sold to google in 2014 for about £400m. we invented the thing and flogged it before anyone realised what it was.
this might be britain’s biggest fumble.
A fundamental misunderstanding of dependencies
NEW: Andy Burnham appears to rule out cutting welfare to fund defence spending - as the Tories have suggested. (He says their plans to cut £4bn from housing allowance would create homelessness).
“Yes, we do everything to support our national security, but it can't come at the expense of social security,” he tells MPs.
“Having strong national security also depends upon having resilience in our communities.
“This side of the house will not be forced to choose between the two, and we will set out a plan to get to 3.5% by 2035 at the spending review.”
PM says he will cut welfare bill “the Labour way” through getting more young people back into work, mental health support etc.

Effectively a thread of happens when there isn’t a clear division of labour. Divide it however you wish (trad, modern, whatever), but two people owning the same task means neither do
Caveat: Obviously, step up to help in exceptional times
“Everything is expensive because of out of control spending”
“What if we subsidise it, with out of control spending?”
Replying to @rcolvile
(On childcare, too, you can make it cheaper by jacking up subsidies - which is what we've done for years. But that jacks up spending/borrowing/taxes! Again, no sign of structural reform...)
Too failed to fail. That’s a new one
🚨 NEW: Andy Burnham has paused plans to nationalise Thames Water due to the cost and legal risk involved

Not understanding the basics of AI - the most important technology of our lifetime - should be disqualifying for a U.S. Senator. This is why we need a new generation of leadership. The future is now.
Once again: it is utterly absurd and deplorable to cut or or otherwise alter any child’s genitals unless medically necessary. We shouldn’t clarify “girls”. Circumcision shouldn’t be allowed. It is abuse.
And my parents said RuneScape was just a waste of time! 🥲
Insane statistic on that chart.
Can’t read but live in the USA? Don’t worry, you’ll earn the same as the average British worker.
That should scare everyone.
The standard explanation for Britain’s declining graduate wage premium is that higher education expanded too fast and too far. But similar expansions elsewhere have not produced the same outcome, writes John Burn-Murdoch. ft.trib.al/RvpW1Vg
Working class kids tend to misunderstand “quantify your achievements” in a CV. They emphasise the wrong things or make claims that arouse further questioning.
Similarly, one may surmise that bullshit is rife in academia, but there are those who know how and those who don’t …
