Need for a rethink of use of devices in schools with evidence that high levels of screen time had a negative effect on children’s emotional stability and reduction in achievement levels
This is pretty significant: Unesco calls for global ban on smartphones in schools < this is a major U-turn for UNESCO, they were advocating their use in the classroom as a driver of literacy in 2014. theguardian.com/world/2023/j….
Even with the best of teaching, dyslexia is still hard for the child and the family 💔 A very important thread to highlight that there is no quick fix or magic solution

Useful thoughts on reading as accurate and automatic, with fluency as a different consideration. The trail of thought and references after the main post is worthwhile too. Thanks Carl
Are you in a ‘muddle’ about allocating decodable reading books? Is ‘90% fluency’ actually based on research? What does it mean? Hear my thoughts here on the Reading Reform Foundation website: rrf.org.uk/2023/04/21/why-ar…

In S2E25 of Progressively Incorrect, I had a wonderful, wide-ranging conversation with @PamelaSnow2 about everything from infant mental health to the reading wars to teacher initial education …and much in between. educationrickshaw.com/2023/0…
It’s not just PISA though. NZ data shows low achievement in writing for too many Ss; many don’t have reading levels for best opportunities. Ts I work with are welcoming the new opportunities to be part of ensuring best and better for all learners
Given recent media beat ups on #NZ education system, useful to be reminded that on Reading Performance measures by PISA, NZ continues to perform well. There’s always room for improvement, but some attacks are based more on ideology than fact. @jantinetti

So why is the Simple View of Reading simple but simultaneously complex? Well it's simple because it confirmed that both decoding and language comprehension are necessary for reading success. It's complex because acquiring and integrating all the parts is very complex! 👇

When it comes to evidence-based reading instruction, we all have unfinished learning.
The expectation is not for any one person to know it all, but rather that every person gets on the learning road.
Why are we teaching a method that the science has debunked…Pulling no punches. So worth a listen.
"You cannot believe in civil rights, you cannot believe in justice, if you do not believe in teaching children to read. We are not teaching children to read. We are turning our backs on science. How can we continue to do that?...This science is 40 years-old.” TY! @Bobby4Brooklyn
