For nearly two months, I’ve been speaking to three trans women detained at a notorious immigration facility in Louisiana. They were incredibly brave to talk to me abt what they’ve endured. veritenews.org/2026/10/05/tr…
Wilson is very much right! She’s the “intellectual girlies who are a little too much into Greek tragedies” Rupi Kaur (a bit cliché, too earnest, interested in aesthetics above all) and there’s genuinely nothing wrong with that
Emily Wilson compared Anne Carson to Rupi Kaur.
"Be Canadian. Be zany. Be moody. Be relatable. Write about your mother. Write about desire. Write about trauma. Write about loneliness. Write about grief. Write about nature. Write about the body. Invoke universals. Make it mythic. Tell it slant. Do not use rhyme. Do not use meter. Use short lines. Leave a lot of space on the page. Juxtapose your words with quivery line drawings in ink or paint or collage."
I have a feeling, Wilson won't be invited to the Nobel ceremony.

There are many secular critics who are writing admirably about AI. But it's been apparent to me for a while that religious—particularly catholic—critics are speaking to the public's moral disquiet in a way that secular thinkers, reliant on utilitarian claims about harm, are not.
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

This is part of the decades-long shift toward viewing higher ed solely as job training. I do think most students already see it that way— they have few other options. But what if the proliferation of low-wage service jobs reflects an economic issue rather than an educational one?
Trump is banning students majoring in degrees that don’t make enough money from taking out college loans. Degrees for social work, art, religious studies, teaching aides, and music will be hit the hardest. trib.al/NmmAzhf

people have said it before but the whole shortform video / youtube / podcast content industry is so extractive of actual newsroom labor, and as far as I can tell very few of those studios have hard news operations, reporters / checkers / researchers...
One of the 7 Cornell rapists, Scott Kretzschmar is apparently still enrolled at @Cornell despite being accused of drugging and gang raping a student for hours on campus. But don’t worry, Cornell takes sexual violence “very seriously” according to their bullshit PR statement.

a brief thread *for non-trans ppl* on why i think recent ads by democrats are so upsetting to the trans community.
tl;dr this is not about language but a plain reading of words that suggests these dems will not materially help trans people be any safer where they live. 1/x

Nearly every day toward the end of my tenure at The Washington Post, someone would complain to me about Jeff Bezos' changes. His decimation of the local news team. His abandonment of DC sports coverage. The shriveled Bezos opinion page, with the ideological diversity of a doorknob.
Today, The Washington Sun launches. It has made enormous new investments: +110 newsroom staff; DC's legendary food columnist; truly the best DMV reporters; a beloved weather blog; a growing roster of columnists; tons of worldclass reporters across many national beats; and also me.
The Washington Sun will not be perfect. We will write stories that you find annoying, dumb, or misinformed. I will make mistakes (& tell me if I do - [email protected]!). But at a time where investments in reporting are evaporating, I'm so excited The Sun is hiring real journalists doing real reporting.
If you want to help, I would love if you signed up for our (free!) newsletters, which routinely get genuinely rave reviews:

JD Vance spread a vicious lie about Haitians eating dogs and cats, said "If I have to create stories so that the American media actually pays attention to the suffering of the American people, then that's what I'm going to do." Then, the administration stripped Haitians of their TPS and this kid was so distressed, he killed himself.

I wrote this article with @yuliramazzini about Nayib Bukele quiet bid for a third term.
With only two opposition candidates in the race and their parties combined polling less than 3%, the race looks increasingly one-sided.
Nayib Bukele, an all-powerful president known for his marketing chops, quietly launched his bid for a third term. Only two opposition candidates have stepped forward, but together their parties haven’t garnered even three percent of expected votes. beta.elfaro.net/en/el-salvad…
Somos has always come off as tone deaf to Puerto Ricans, tbqh. Ppl should at least support small biz affected by the drought, and meet with activists. There’s a lot the US Congress can do, such as releasing FEMA money for reconstruction.
Puerto Rico is in a drought emergency, and San Juan's water is rationed. Should the Somos conference reconsider its plans?

Another legal immigrant arrested and imprisoned. Here's the rule: DHS can't arrest anyone without a final order of removal. The only constitutional purpose of civil immigration detention is to remove them. If you don't have a removal order, you can't lock them up just for fun.

A construction crew in Barberton, Ohio, rescued an abandoned kitten on the worksite. And he joined the team.
They heard him meowing coming from their excavator.
Supervisor Chase Guello checked the skid plate on the Komatsu. A tiny kitten tumbled out.
They warmed her up, moved her into the office trailer, and named her Sue short for Komatsu. She’s now the official shop cat.
It really is so incredibly annoying, as someone who lives in the neighborhood, that they cut off our ability to cross from Amsterdam to Broadway
Columbia University closed its gates after students and protesters set up pro-Palestinian encampments. That was two years ago, and the still-closed gates represent a state of capitulation to the Trump administration’s attack on higher education. curbed.com/article/columbia-…
There's also the camaraderie caused by late train or a car blocking streetcar tracks that fosters civic spirit.
