Everyone asks "how do we afford PIP?"
Nobody asks "why does disability cost so much?"
A grab rail: £8 at Screwfix. £85 through a mobility company.
Adapted cutlery: £12 to manufacture. £35 in the catalogue.
A shower seat: £15 plastic stool. £90 as a "shower aid."
A postural chair: £200 to build. £800 with "disability" on the label.
Disability costs more because the market CHARGES more. Not because it COSTS more. The word "adapted" on the box adds 300-500% to the price.
PIP exists to cover the "extra cost of disability." But the extra cost is ARTIFICIAL. Created by manufacturers who know you NEED the product and price accordingly.
Fix the price. Sell aids at cost. Remove the markup. Remove the VAT. Remove the glossy catalogue and the sales rep's commission.
The "extra cost of disability" drops by 60-80%. PIP spending falls. Without cutting a single person's support.
Helen Whately has posted thirteen times asking how to cut PIP. She has never once asked why disability products cost five times what they should.
builduk.club disability charter. Fix the price. Not the person.

I completely reject the way the BBC has framed this argument, and particularly the suggestion that the triple lock is somehow becoming unsustainable because pensioners’ living standards have improved more quickly than those of working people. That is an extraordinarily narrow way of looking at what has actually happened.
There is a rather important part of this story that is being conveniently overlooked. Successive Conservative governments froze the personal tax allowance, and the present Labour Government has continued that policy. The consequence for pensioners is particularly stark. Their State Pension rises, as it should, yet the amount they are permitted to receive before paying income tax remains frozen. They are therefore being steadily dragged into the tax system through fiscal drag, with an increasing proportion of their pension becoming taxable.
Indeed, we are now reaching the absurd position where the full new State Pension itself is likely to exceed the personal tax allowance. The Government will increase the pension under the triple lock and then, because it refuses to raise the tax threshold, begin taking part of that increase back in taxation. If we are going to talk about a “ratchet effect”, perhaps that is the ratchet effect we ought to be discussing.
Nor are these payments some unexpected act of generosity bestowed upon pensioners by the state. These are people who have worked and paid National Insurance contributions throughout their lives on the understanding that, when they reached retirement, the State Pension would form part of their income. For millions of people, that was part of the social contract between the individual and the state.
We should also remember how that contract has already changed. When many of today’s pensioners began their working lives, the State Pension age was 65 for men and 60 for women. Those ages have since been increased. People have already been required to work longer and wait longer before receiving the pension towards which they spent decades contributing.
Against that background, to portray a State Pension of around £250 a week as evidence that pensioners are somehow becoming too prosperous is frankly absurd. Nobody could seriously describe that sum, from which people must meet the ordinary costs of living, as an extravagant retirement income.
The triple lock was introduced for a reason. The value of the British State Pension had been allowed to fall behind earnings over many years, while pensioner poverty became a serious national problem. It was designed to prevent that happening again and to ensure that pensioners shared, at least to some reasonable extent, in the rising prosperity of the country rather than being progressively left behind.
So the question should not be whether Britain can afford to honour the triple lock. The more pertinent question is why governments believe it acceptable to increase the State Pension while deliberately freezing the tax threshold until that pension itself becomes taxable.
After a lifetime of work and contributions, pensioners are not asking for charity. They are asking for the settlement they spent their working lives paying towards to be honoured. That distinction matters.

Digitalisation is leaving many of our elderly people behind - and calling it ‘progress’. Banks close branches. Governments demand login apps. Local councils demand paying for parking on an app. Shops want QR codes. Customer help phone lines become an AI chatbot.
Elderly people built the world that we live in. Now governments, organisations and corporations tell them: download the app or lose access to society.
If society requires a smartphone, perfect eyesight and nimble handed digital fluency to participate, it isn’t progress. It’s discriminatory by design.

Digitalisation is “for your convenience.” - try explaining that to the 3 million people who are not online in the UK. The majority (67%) are aged 70 or over. The digitalisation of everything is creating digital exclusion for millions of people - in particular, our elderly.
Locked out of the basic services they spent a lifetime paying for.
This isn’t progress. This is deliberate exclusion of millions of elderly people dressed up as efficiency. Especially for the generation who rebuilt this country, raised us, and are now being told: adapt or disappear.
Convenience for some. Isolation for millions. That’s not digital transformation. That’s digital abandonment.

Just had the strangest interaction with a group of lads on way back from an event, probably no more than 14-years-old, whilst waiting for a (very delayed) train to get back into central London from Windsor. They’d been causing a nuisance for a solid 20 mins. One walked past me and randomly told me I looked dapper (I’m in a suit - nothing special but obvious was to him).
He ended up asking if I can show him how to tie a tie so I lent him mine and we did just that. Cut a long story short, they’re all white working-class lads and have all dropped out of education - this absolutely breaks my heart. We do not do enough for white working-class boys at all. I’m also baffled as to why they’re wandering around rail stations so late at night - where are their parents? It’s so sad man.
Anyway, after I taught the young fella how to tie a tie, they all went and sat quietly and were on their best behaviour. I didn’t even tell them off! They’re now on my train in the next carriage and sitting like model passengers. It’s so sad man - all these kids need is some mentoring, a bit of direction, and someone who actually gives a toss about their wellbeing. We fail these children.

How can anyone look at these beautiful creatures and say we will destroy their land and build a 500 chalet tourist holiday village & a 1015 space carpark destroying ancient woodland because they want to make a profit at the expense of an area of outstanding natural beauty with rare and endangered wildlife
