Transit advocate John Ross and various local preservationists/rail enthusiasts championed reactivation proposals, pointing out that the existing open-cut, tunnel, and embankment rights-of-way provided a ready-made corridor to interlink outer-borough communities without requiring costly land acquisition. Thanks again @danrivoli and @NY1 you guys made this possible.

The General Electric Genesis Locomotive #218 that kept this city moving should be on display at the Metro-North Yankees - East 153rd Street station for the 9/11 Subway Series — New York Mets vs. New York Yankees.
On 9/11, we remember. We honor. We come together as one city.
What better way to pay tribute to our Heroes than at the ballpark where New York stands united? That locomotive is more than steel. It's resilience. It's service. It's New York.
I'll definitely be there for the game ⚾️🇺🇸

In @WinnHu @nytimes story “A Tired Brooklyn Transit Hub Finally Getting Attention” [Nov. 26, 2017], she documented Broadway Junction as it was — Brooklyn’s third-busiest transit complex, serving the A, C, J, Z and L at the intersection of Bushwick, Bedford-Stuyvesant, Brownsville and East New York, yet long neglected, inaccessible, and disconnected from opportunity. City officials at the time were talking about making it a “destination stop.” The community was demanding that any investment benefit residents, not displace them.
A lot has transpired since then. And now, the promise is becoming infrastructure.
Thanks to President Joe Biden’s Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, Broadway Junction is getting a new life.
The Federal Investment is Real and Transformational.

CRITICAL INFRASTRUCTURE ALERT: Active Water Main Break - 8 Hours Unaddressed at Fulton Street and Howard Avenue in Brooklyn.
For over eight hours, an active water break has been left unattended at this location. What began as a small leak has now escalated into a serious public safety and infrastructure threat.
NYC Transit workers have been forced to construct a makeshift dam around the subway grates just to be able to continue their work.
Directly below this site is critical infrastructure: the A and C train lines at Fulton Street. Uncontrolled water intrusion at this level puts our entire transit system, commuters, and workers at risk.
A minor water break left unchecked can quickly become a major emergency. Immediate response and repair are required.

The @NYCParks is playing a deadly game with these trees in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn. @News12BK did the story about the trees on my block last week, Fulton Street between Howard and Saratoga Avenues ( 311-27821303). And now at Saratoga Park (311-28453289) on Howard Avenue and Halsey Street. With these heavy rain falls and thunder, just wait.

Jamaica Station is Long Island's and JFK's front door, but there's nowhere to actually be there. We need a proper lounge: big departure boards, comfortable seating, real food and cold drinks, and warm, enclosed waiting areas, not just platforms in the wind. If we're reimagining Jamaica, let's build it like a real gateway.

This is what @LIRR Jamaica Station deserves is a lounge. A place to unwind and relax before the journey whether it's on a plane, train or bus. Jamaica Station has a lot of real estate to make that happen.

Jamaica is exactly where a lounge like that should exist.
It's the 4th busiest commuter rail station in North America, handling 200,000 daily riders and over 1,000 LIRR, subway, and AirTrain trains a day, and it hasn't had a major customer experience upgrade since AirTrain opened in 2003. That's why Governor Hochul just put $50M in the FY27 budget for planning a full reimagining, jointly run by the Port Authority and MTA, and launched a customer survey to guide it. Keep in mind @Amtrak will be coming through soon.
If you're going to rebuild it as a world-class gateway to JFK, you can't just do new signage and floors. You need tiered waiting.
Here is how that Centurion / Sky Club model translates to Jamaica:
1. The Premium Lounge - Airside Logic Landside
Location: The new overhead portal mezzanine that was built to link all LIRR platforms with direct access to AirTrain and the subway. That mezzanine is the perfect footprint - glass on both sides, you can watch the platforms like you watch the tarmac.
What it would have, straight from my image:
• Daylight + Track Views: Floor-to-ceiling windows facing the LIRR Main Line like an airport lounge faces the runway. Your image nails it - warm wood, marble tables, blue velvet. • Real Transit Boards: Instead of flight info, integrated LIRR, AirTrain, and JFK departure boards. Like a Delta Sky Club, but for Track 7 and Terminal 4. • Access model: Amex Centurion / Platinum, Delta SkyMiles Reserve, Chase Sapphire Reserve, plus LIRR Monthly + AirTrain bundle, and a $50 day pass. The JFK traveler will pay it without blinking during a 45-minute LIRR / AirTrain connection. • Offer: Proper bar, Long Island / Queens-centric food, fast Wi-Fi, showers for JFK connectors, quiet pods for calls, and luggage storage. Right now there is nowhere to securely leave a bag at Jamaica.
This becomes the revenue engine. Lounges like this fund the rest of the station.
2. Secured Waiting Areas - The Real Fix
A lounge can't be the only option. Jamaica needs what Penn and Grand Central are finally adding:
• Ticketed Passenger Waiting Rooms: Access with a same-day LIRR ticket or AirTrain ticket, tap-to-enter turnstiles. No more open-air platforms in January or trying to wait in the Sutphin Blvd Dunkin. • Family / ADA Quiet Zone: Lower noise, more seating, charging at every seat. • AirTrain Transfer Hold Room: After you tap your AirTrain fare, you enter a conditioned, secured area rather than queuing on the skybridge.
The security model already exists for AirTrain - Jamaica is a fare-controlled boundary. Just extend that logic to the LIRR side with glass and gates.
A centralized police station within the facilities, not just on the ground level.
The current redesign survey is explicitly asking about traffic flow, crowding, and integration between LIRR, NYC Transit, and AirTrain. The agencies know the current experience is a choke point for the $19B JFK rebuild. If all the new JFK terminals are getting Centurion lounges and premium spaces, the railhead that feeds 30% of those passengers should too.

Urgent Quality of Life and Public Safety Concern - Vacant Lots on Fulton Street between Howard Ave and Saratoga Ave, Brooklyn
The Honorable @NYCMayor Zohran Kwame Mamdani
Mayor of the City of New York
City Hall
New York, NY 10007
Dear Mayor Mamdani,
I am writing to bring to your attention an ongoing condition on Fulton Street between Howard Avenue and Saratoga Avenue in Brooklyn that requires immediate attention.
The vacant lots in this corridor have become severely overgrown with vegetation. This overgrowth is now contributing to several secondary issues:
1. Sanitation: The lots are accumulating litter and illegal dumping, which is attracting rodents and creating an unsanitary environment for residents and pedestrians.
2. Public Safety: The height and density of the vegetation severely limits visibility, creating a public safety hazard. It provides concealment and increases the risk of individuals being ambushed or harmed, particularly during evening hours.
3. Sidewalk Condition: In addition, the adjacent sidewalks are extensively cracked, broken, and uneven, posing a significant trip-and-fall hazard and accessibility concern for seniors, parents with strollers, and persons with disabilities.
I have previously reported this issue and am respectfully requesting that your office direct the appropriate agencies — including the Department of Sanitation, Department of Parks and Recreation, Department of Housing Preservation and Development, and the Department of Transportation — to inspect the location and take corrective action.
This includes cutting and maintaining the vegetation, clearing the accumulated garbage, securing the lots, and repairing the damaged sidewalk.
Thank you for your leadership and your commitment to improving the quality of life in our neighborhoods. I would appreciate an update on any action taken and am happy to provide photos or additional information if needed.
Respectfully,
John R. Ross

Immediate Vegetation Removal Required on Critical Corridors — Before an Incident Forces the Issue.
The trees and branches growing into the right-of-way on several key lines are not a landscaping concern. They are an active safety and reliability threat that needs to be cut back now.
Priority sections demanding immediate attention:
A line from Rockaway Boulevard station to Howard Beach-JFK station
B and Q lines from Sheepshead Bay station to Prospect Park station
Select segments along the N line where encroachment has reached the same dangerous level
These corridors run through areas where branches can — and do — reach the tracks, foul signals, obstruct the roadway, or drop during high winds and summer storms. When that happens, you get emergency stops, signal failures, cascading delays across the network, and unnecessary risk to train crews and passengers. We have seen enough of these preventable disruptions to know the pattern.
This is not about waiting for the next storm to prove the point. Proactive removal on these specific stretches is cheaper, faster, and safer than reacting after the fact. The right-of-way belongs to the trains, not the trees. Where branches are close enough to become missiles or obstructions, they need to come down.
I am calling on MTA Subways, System Safety, and any coordinated effort with city agencies to treat these corridors as priority work. Inspect them, trim them aggressively, and remove what cannot be safely maintained. The communities that rely on these lines — and the men and women who operate and maintain the equipment — deserve a clear, defended right-of-way.

The Hollis Long Island Rail Road station should be dedicated to the pioneering legends of Hip-Hop culture — Run-DMC and Jam Master Jay.
Formed in Hollis, Queens in 1983, Joseph 'Run' Simmons, Darryl 'DMC' McDaniels, and Jason 'Jam Master Jay' Mizell didn’t just make music — they built a movement. They took hip-hop from the block to the world, fused rap with rock, redefined style, and gave a generation a voice. Their classic 'Christmas in Hollis' turned their neighborhood into an anthem heard around the globe.
A nearby street already bears the name 'Run DMC JMJ Way.' It is time to extend that honor to the LIRR station itself — the daily gateway for the community that gave us these icons. Dedicating the station would celebrate Queens’ outsized role in American and global culture, inspire our youth, attract cultural tourism, and create a permanent landmark worthy of their legacy.
Hollis gave the world kings of hip-hop. Let’s crown their station in their name.

Turning the ongoing glow-up at Hollis @LIRR station into a permanent shoutout to @OfficialRunDMC and especially Jam Master Jay would be straight legendary. Hollis is the birthplace of hip-hop royalty: Run, DMC, and JMJ grew up right there in Queens, crafting the sound that changed the game forever. Jam Master Jay (Jason Mizell) stayed rooted in the neighborhood his whole life, and the whole crew reps Hollis hard. The station is currently undergoing rehabilitation, which presents an opportune timeframe.

I am confident that Mr. Andy Byford will consistently make appropriate decisions, regardless of the prevailing administration.
Mr. Byford was instrumental in strengthening safety and infrastructure at the Long Island Rail Road’s East New York station. He drove targeted upgrades in signage, lighting, and new surveillance cameras by working directly and effectively with LIRR personnel. While LIRR operates as a separate agency from New York City Transit, Byford bridged that divide, rolled up his sleeves, and delivered results on the ground. That’s the kind of cross-agency leadership that actually gets things done in this city.
While this station may not be considered optimal, it holds significant importance within this particular area of Brooklyn.
