I’m not really a fan of realistic looking games (and prefer perf over render quality), but I’m a huge advocate of innovation.
I hope we’ll see devs target a broader (and older) range of hardware and innovate within that range.
Adrian, who is now at Valve got me drinking my first coffee from Starbucks during one of his visits, mocha-tiiiime /shakefist
While the development timeline was fairly short, I have enough stories that could easily fill a book. The team pulled off some amazing work during that time and with a crew of mostly inexperienced devs and modders.
I remember being handed a piece of paper with weapon tweaks after [redacted] got wrecked 😅
Another time [redacted] got so upset about bunny hopping, he grabbed a nerf gun to demonstrate how silly it was & accidentally pulled it off w/ a headshot to our rendering programmer 🤣
Mathew VanDolen and I implemented the riot shield/pitsol, molotov and other weapons during #counterstrike Condition Zero development, needless to say they were some heated playtests internally at Gearbox…

Everybody thought I was crazy (and honestly some were quite mad I even tried Ogg) but we made it work! The Xiph.org devs were amazing partners too.
but also the first to get sample accurate decompression working for Halo’s dynamic music system. I was finding bugs and literally double checking the output waveforms in Audacity!
Anyhow, it was “fun” testing out a variety of compression formats before landing on Ogg…
I worked closely with Marty on Halo PC. He was great and had strict standards when it came to how the PC audio engine reproduced his music.
We were not only the first game to use Ogg Vorbis (we were mandated to ship on ONE CD-ROM due to costs!)…
It’s a great lesson, sometimes we just have to trust our guts! Story time about working with Matry back on Halo PC…

Happy to hear, I come from Duke3D/HL1/UT modding myself. Modding is a blast and can be a path to paid gamedev roles.

Still waiting for HL3 here too, one day I hope!
Another effort that’s impressive to see as somebody from the original Halo PC team.
I built a new version of Halo for iPhone and iPad that plays online. You're in real matches, with PC players, on the servers people still play on today.
The other Halo builds going around run the Xbox game, and none of them can join these servers. Mine runs Halo: Custom Edition for PC, so you open Halo's own server list, pick a game and join.
GameSpy shut down its servers in 2014. The community has kept Halo PC online ever since by hosting the server list and running the servers.
