Working on some story edits, planning for a new play next year, some acting workshops.. But listen; I’m a freelancer: you need a director / actor / dramaturg / improv coach / confidence in public speaking coach / access support worker for your DYCP application .. DMs are open.

This is an excellent thread about speaking in public (not just stand up comedy) & the responsibility that sits with you. The first response - about guiding the audience - is spot on, too. Sometimes you have to get out of your own way & trust that the audience wants to trust you.
I have seen a LOT of new material comedy over the last couple of years and I'd like to give some advice: Don't say "Well that didn't work" every time a joke doesn't land. For several reasons. it creates a negative vibe around your performance. It starts to prime the audience

What the duologue sessions remind me of, is that in acting - but also in life - we don’t have to go it alone. We don’t have to carry the burden solely on our own shoulders.

I’m generalising obviously, because each person’s situation is unique to them, but while acknowledging hardships and privilege barriers, I do earnestly believe that if we put energy into supporting one another - in treating those opposite us like geniuses -

and if we can, for the most part, trust that they’re doing the same for us - then the struggle can be lessened for both of us, with a lot less effort. It’s one of the core platforms of all my workshops. Get in touch if you’d like to chat further.

Just on my way out of a drama workshop where I’ve been teaching two handlers, duologues and improv around pairs. I’m lucky in that the group I’m working with are smart, funny and kind, and each session is a lot of fun.

You don’t need to pack every hour with value (which is relative anyway). And if you want to put your point across, you don’t have to take on the pressure of being the only one talking. confidenceincommunication.co…

In 2016 I spotted Glenda Jackson with bags of shopping waiting for a bus from Lewisham to Blackheath. I told her how much her work meant to me, and asked if she would be interested in doing a Q&A at a volunteer-run cinema. To my amazement, she gave me her phone number...

When addressing others, it’s tempting to spell out every aspect of what you’re talking about, so your audience doesn’t get left behind. But! Not only can they keep up with you, often they’re way ahead - and that’s not a bad thing. (1/2)
