In 2016 I spotted Glenda Jackson with bags of shopping waiting for a bus from Lewisham to Blackheath. I told her how much her work meant to me, and asked if she would be interested in doing a Q&A at a volunteer-run cinema. To my amazement, she gave me her phone number...

While shooting CUTTHROAT ISLAND in Malta, I brought my 16mm camera to make a black-and-white short film. When the production blew up the pirate ship, I captured the massive explosion. This was one of the last big-budget studio films to rely almost entirely on practical in-camera effects and stunts. Regardless of its initial reception, making this film was the adventure of a lifetime.
This is from a recent scan of my original camera negative.

100% sure the son is buying copies of the London Review of Books to tactically place around Nolan towers.
Christopher Nolan says he told his son he removed his Oscars from his office while writing ‘THE ODYSSEY’ because they felt “daunting” to look at.
His son replied: “But you didn’t win any for writing.”

emily wilson is clearly correct that nolan's odysseus is not a complicated man and she identifies a lot of contradictions in the film but i think it's also kinda clear from that piece that she's not a film writer/theorist and isn't hugely interested in that aspect of it
I'm generally allergic to Nolan fandom but Wilson just doesn't get what writing for the screen involves. The Odyssey is an incredibly tightly structured and thematically focused (almost) 3 hour film. I would be impressed if I'd written that. You'd be mad to be ashamed of that.
#TheOdyssey translator Emily Wilson slams Christopher Nolan's movie over "abysmal" writing: “I would be ashamed to have written any part of this script.”
“Nolan’s ‘Odyssey’ lacks many of the elements that make the poem great. It has nothing convincing to say about time, memory, history, war, or bout the relationship between one warrior’s glorious return and the lives of his family, adversaries, comrades, friends and neighbors. It lacks psychological, emotional, political and ethical depth. Its narrative structure is gimmicky. The writing is abysmal. None of the characters has convincing motivation for their actions or words. There are no sex scenes, and all the food looks horrible.” (via London Review of Books/The Guardian).

I agree with her 100% tbh
I talked to famed translator Emily Wilson about Christopher Nolan's Odyssey, in a wide-ranging conversation about shifting norms of translation, the strangeness of Homer's world, and the online discourse about the movie
Here's what she said about the film:
- "It is a big spectacle, and it is a fun time at the movies. My teenagers really loved it, and it was fun to go with my teenagers. It’s a fun summer action movie."
- "I don’t think it’s a complicated movie. And I don’t think it’s even about a complicated man. I think it’s a quite simple action hero movie about an action hero who feels bad about being an action hero."
- "When the casting was announced, it was The Talented Mr. Ripley that gave me hope in terms of where this might go with Matt Damon as Odysseus. Homer’s Odysseus is a complicated man, polytropos ... [But] Matt Damon in the film is traumatized Jason Bourne."
- "There’s no Cyclops trick. There’s no comedy. Matt Damon isn’t required to be be scheming. We don’t even see him building the Trojan Horse, which I thought was an interesting choice. We have this tech hero, but we don’t see him building his tech. We see him agonizing about the results of the tech."

Wow.
Who is the most powerful director in Hollywood right now? Or the second-most powerful? What about the third? The 23rd?
These are the questions that have occupied our offices for the better part of a year, since senior writer Nate Jones first started mulling his ranking of the most powerful directors in Hollywood. As the industry exits an era of cinematic universes, when mega-producers like Kevin Feige ruled the land, directors seem to matter again. A new generation of cinephiles has come of age, raised on YouTube, Reddit, and Letterboxd.
The balance of power has shifted, Puck’s Matt Belloni tells Jones.
Over the course of several months, Jones consulted with agents, executives, producers, and publicists — all anonymously, of course — as well as a handful of L.A.-based journalists like Belloni who know the inner workings of Hollywood intimately. Their opinions influenced the list, though the final order was determined by him alone.

When I lived in Montreal, a friend told me the craziest thing. He had discovered a bat sleeping in his closet. I marched him straight to the hospital to get rabies shots, and they gave it immediately.
Even if you're not sure if you got bitten or scratched, any contact with them needs to be evaluated.
Once you develop symptoms, death is almost certain. Early vaccination will save your life.
