Today we are announcing Oratomic. Based in Pasadena, our goal is to build the world’s first fault-tolerant quantum computer using neutral atom qubits.
Last Fall, I came to fully appreciate the potential of neutral atoms combined with high-rate error correction. Soon after, I made the decision to leave Google and Berkeley to go all-in on what is now Oratomic.

10 years ago Kelly et al showed bigger rep code circuits do better. The dream was to do the same for a full quantum code.
This year we finally did it. arxiv.org/abs/2408.13687 has d=5 surface codes twice as good as d=3. And d=7 twice as good again, outliving the physical qubits.

People often ask if ML or software skills are more the bottleneck to AI progress. It’s the wrong question—both are invaluable, and people with both sets of skills can have outsized impact. We find it easier, however, to teach people ML skills as needed than software engineering.
